As I was reading the Internet last night, I came across an obscure article hidden on Bloomberg.com that gave me pause, and had me refresh the screen to make sure I wasn’t imagining this.

I know that Lufthansa is one of the world’s leading Air Cargo operators, and I know they transport everything from Bugatti Veyrons to Dorothy’s Toto. What I did not realize though is that animals that are transported by Lufthansa have their own lounge. Similar to us humans who have the good fortune to have access to places like Lufthansa’s First Class Terminal in Frankfurt and First Class Lounges in Munich and Frankfurt, animals as well have a place they can gather before and after their flights.

In their Frankfurt complex, Lufthansa has the facilities to handle anything from an African White Rhinoceros to tropical fish. According to the article, tropical fish and live bait transported from Asia and South America are actually Lufthansa’s largest animal cargo demographic. According to the article, in a typical year Lufthansa will also transport 14,000 dogs and cats, 8,000 pigs, 2,000 horses and 150 miscellaneous zoo inhabitants.

But there is one serious question that begs to be answered. Should I opt out of the First Class Terminal visits in a couple of weeks, and show up at the Animal Lounge, will I actually get a live duck to take home with me? Stay tuned…….there may be a trip report on this.
