Flughafen Munchen has officially put shovel to soil and has broken ground on it’s new satellite terminal. Already a perennial favorite among travelers and an award winning airport, Munich(MUC) will add a 125,000 square meter satellite to Terminal 2. The cost of the project is forecasted to be approximately 650 million Euro (860 million US Dollars). The cost of the project will be shared by the airport operation authority and Lufthansa on a 60/40 partnership arrangement.
The new facility will house 2 Lufthansa Service Centers, 24 transfer desks and 42 passport control stations. Additionally there will be 9000 square meters of retail space and 5 Lufthansa Lounges. The new building will be connected to the current terminal 2 building via an underground rail system. According to the airport this expansion will allow Munchen to handle 11 million more passengers each year. Currently, 32 million passengers pass through Munchen annually.
Construction has begun with preparatory ground work and the terminal should be able to open its doors to its first passengers in 2015.
Munich is among my most favorite airports to fly through (Frankfurt and Hong Kong are a close 2nd) so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this project turns out!
