Lufthansa has been operating the Airbus A340 since 1993 when their first A340-300 took to the skies. In 2003, Lufthansa expanded the A340 fleet when Airbus introduced the A340-600 variant. At the peak of A340 operations, Lufthansa operated 50 of the type. Recently, LH has begun retiring the oldest of their A340-300 aircraft. 3 A340-300s have been retired so far in 2014: D-AIGD, D-AIGF & D-AIGH.
D-AIGL or ‘Herne’ joined the fleet in May 1996
D-AIHE joined the fleet in January 2004.
D-AIHF or ‘Lubeck’ joined the fleet in February 2004.
D-AIGU or ‘Castrop-Rauxel’ in Munich (MUC)
