One of the things that I like about germanwings (Lufthansa’s European LCC), is their progressive thinking when it comes to travel promotions. Their most popular program has been around for some time but for most of us in the USA we seldom see it or hear about it. With Lufthansa’s decision last year to finally consolidate most of their European network (non-Munich or Frankfurt related) into germanwings, many of us from the States are starting to discover germanwings for the first time.
‘Blind Booking’ is a program where your destination is selected for you based on a certain theme of travel that you choose during the booking process. Options include traveling to cities specializing in Shopping, Nature, GLBT Lifestyle, Party, Sun & Beach, Culture, Europe Mix and Metropolis. Within each of these categories is a selection of several cities that you could potentially be booked to for your trip. It won’t be until after you pay for your ticket that you find out which city you will be visiting. However, you can deselect cities from the grouping if you would like (but it will cost you €5 for each city you deselect!).
For example, if you chose ‘Metropolis’ as your theme, you will be randomly booked to one of the following cities:
GLBT Option? You would be booked to one of these cities:
You can choose to depart from any of the following airports: Cologne-Bonn, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf or Hanover.
The current Blind Booking promo runs until the end of April (based on the germanwings timetable) and fares start as low as €33 per leg. Keep in mind that germanwings will charge additional fees for advanced seat selection (€10-18) and for checking luggage (€ 12.50 for up to 23kg). Please note that Blind Booking deals do not earn Miles & More credit. They only earn credit in germanwings’ Boomerang Club where you will earn 10 miles per €uro spent.
I usually recommend a program like this to someone who is traveling to Europe but does not have much planned, can’t decide on an itinerary OR they need a little nudge to help them discover something new. To learn more about this unique travel planning experience, please visit germanwings’ Blind Booking website, and let germanwings decide where you go!
Do I earn miles on those flights? If so, they would be like really cheap mileage runs when destinations don’t matter anyway…
You do earn miles, but will likely be in very low fare class that wouldn’t make the runs economical. Here is the link to the earning chart: https://www.germanwings.com/en/Boomerang-Club/Collect-Miles-MilesandMore.htm
