Lufthansa’s ‘Low Cost Carrier’ Eurowings announced earlier today that it was cancelling service between Cologne and Boston effective August 26, 2016. The 3 weekly flights had been in place only since May 4. No reason was given for the route cancellation but I suspect load factors were a major contributor to the decision.
Eurowings’ other US destination, Miami, remains in place for now with 3 flights per week from Cologne. Eurowings continues to serve several other Caribbean destinations including Cancun and Havana, among others.

SWISS is running a short-lived fare sale that offers some of their lowest fares that you’ll see between the US and Europe.
Most fares from the East Coast range in the mid to upper $600 range with the best fare being between Newark and Basel which can be booked for only $617. Fares from the West Coast start in the upper $600 range but you can book Los Angeles / Basel for only $617.
The fare sale has 2 periods of availability, one for late summer travel and the other for winter travel. The late summer fare deals are available for travel between August 28 and October 29. The winter fare deal is available for travel between October 30 and December 15 AND between January 9 and March 31. Weekend surcharges will apply if you travel Thursday through Sunday.
The fare sale for both deals ends on August 19.

Months ago, Lufthansa and Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) had set a soft target of August 5 to come to terms with one another and finally reach an agreement that would satisfy everyone. With the deadline now 10 days in the past, no major progress was reported. As a matter a fact, in comments coming from both sides it seems that they may have even lost some ground that was gained in past negotiations.
Are Strikes likely?
At this point, no. Negotiations have not been contentious and both sides agree that it is in everyone’s best interest to work towards an agreement that would appease everyone. Of course this has been proven to be easier said than done.
For now it looks as though negotiations will pause which will allow each side to go back to their corner, assess what has happened and what needs to happen. Once that takes place, they’ll start another round of negotiations and continue the dance.
