Lufthansa has just published the touring schedule for their Junkers Ju52, affectionately known as ‘Tante Ju’ (Aunt Ju). For those of you not familiar with this iconic Lufthansa aircraft, it was built in 1936 and through several ‘rescues’ and renovations has become a favorite of aviation fans throughout Europe.
‘Auntie Ju’ is maintained by Lufthansa Technik and is flown by a special group of volunteer Lufthansa pilots who are specially trained to fly this ‘analog’ aircraft along with volunteer cabin crew. The plane travels throughout Germany and to events around Europe. The wonderful thing about the whole concept of preserving this aircraft is the fact that the public is encouraged and welcome aboard to experience the nostalgia that the Ju-52 brings. Each year, hundreds of passengers take in an experience that will last a lifetime. As a matter of fact, I’m looking forward to my own ‘experience’ aboard the Junkers coming up during the 825th Port Festival that will be held in Hamburg in May 2014 (yes you read that correctly – 825 years of celebrations!)
For 2014, the Ju-52 will operate 658 takeoff and landings and make 32 appearances throughout Germany. Additionally, special appearances are planned in Austria and pontentially at special events throughout Europe. To look at flight availability and to book your tickets, please visit the official Ju-52 booking webpage. You’ll notice that each location will have multiple flights during the scheduled visit, some flights are round trip from and to the same airport while some ‘repositioning’ flights will operate 1 way between a city pair. All of this is clearly spelled out on the website.
To further whet your appetite, you can look at this 30 minute video for an up close look at the Ju52 and the people responsible for her ability to fly today.
In addition to the timetable below, Lufthansa also provided the fare schedule for the upcoming year. Depending on a given appearance, flights will be operated either in 30, 45 or 60 minute segments. Respectively the fares are €199, €279 and €372 ($270, $380 and $505). Repositioning flights will each have unique pricing.
