MUNICH Airport Begins Body Scanner Trials For LUFTHANSA’s US Bound Passengers

MUNICH Airport Begins Body Scanner Trials For LUFTHANSA’s US Bound Passengers

Starting this week, Munich Airport’s operating authority has begun the trial use of a full body scanner at the additional security check-point that US bound passengers must pass through prior to boarding their Lufthansa flights to the States.   This is referring to the check-point located in terminal 2, on the H-North level.

As part of the trial, passengers will have the ability to ‘opt out’ of the full body scan and be subject to the normal pat down procedure that is currently in place.   I’m not aware of the length of trial, however the airport authority will use this test to determine if there is long term viability for the use of full body scanners.

This is the first time that ‘MUC’ has installed a full body scanner as part of their passenger screening procedures.

LUFTHANSA Flight Cancellations Ahead Of Strike

LUFTHANSA Flight Cancellations Ahead Of Strike

Thanks to the strikes scheduled to cripple German airports tomorrow, Lufthansa has announced the cancellation of over 500 flights. These include long haul flights to the USA and Asia as well.

On FlyerTalk, we set up a WIKI designed to track the latest news. As part of this, there is a detailed list of all the flight cancellations.

If your travels are impacted by the strike tomorrow, Lufthansa will re-accommodate you as best as possible. There are 2 ways to take care of this. You can call Lufthansa but expect lengthy hold times due to thousands of travelers who will be impacted trying to call in. This link will take you to the phone directory for Lufthansa service centers around the world. If you are traveling on an award ticket (ie United Mileage Plus redemption), you may want to contact UA instead since they would have access to your booking and could help you with your options.

The better option would be to go on Lufthansa.com and use their “My Booking” function which will allow you to sort out other options that are available to you.

I wish I had better news, but thanks to the union’s antics this will be one of the worst strikes to grip Germany in quite a while and airlines are being held hostage.

STRIKE UPDATE: Frankfurt Strike Schedule & Other German Airports To Strike Thursday

STRIKE UPDATE: Frankfurt Strike Schedule & Other German Airports To Strike Thursday

As the strike contagion spreads through Germany, the union representing Aircraft handlers and other employees at most of Germany’s airports on Thursday which is intended to cripple air travel throughout the country and Europe.

Specifically, Frankfurt’s aircraft handlers, maintenance, freight handlers etc. will all walk off the job between 3:30a and 2:30p local time.

Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hannover, Hamburg and Stuttgart will also be part of the walk-out this Thursday.

Expect major delays and cancelations throughout Lufthansa’s network for Thursday as the airline is fairly defenseless against this ridiculous union tactic. I say ridiculous because in essence, this strike is a sympathy strike as Child Care workers battle to get better salaries and benefits. So why not cripple the country’s airports as a result, right?

LH has announced that it will rebook passengers traveling to or from affected airports on the 27th at no cost.  You can take care of your booking yourself by visiting this Lufthansa webpage.

Also, you can Use this link to determine the best phone number to contact based on your location if you can not access your reservation online to make necessary changes.

In addition, Lufthansa does have a webpage that you can look to which provides updates on possible flight disruptions.

We’ve also set up a dedicated WIKI thread on FlyerTalk that will try to gather the latest information as it becomes available. Check there often if you travels take you to or through Germany this week.
