Lufthansa’s 747-8i To See New Destinations And No More Doha

Lufthansa’s 747-8i To See New Destinations And No More Doha

Lufthansa updated their timetable to reflect the deployment of the 747-8i on 2 routes that have yet to see the ‘Queen of the Skies’.

For starters, LH will send the 747-8i ‘home’ when it is deployed on flights between Seattle and Frankfurt from November 6 to December 30, 2017 in anticipation of increased holiday traffic.

The more surprising debut of the 747-8i will be to Dubai, UAE.    However, the appearance will be short-lived since the 747-8i will only fly from Frankfurt to Dubai between October 16 and October 30.   This temporary assignment will allow pax on the route to experience First Class.

With the good news, comes a bit of bad….

Effective October 29, 2017, LH will no longer service Doha, Qatar as part of their Frankfurt – Kuwait City – Doha circuit.    Service will continue between FRA and KWI, but will no longer continue onward to Doha.   Can’t help to think if all the in-fighting between several mid-eastern countries and Qatar has anything to do with the demand on the route.

AIR BERLIN Canceling Number Of Long Haul Routes

AIR BERLIN Canceling Number Of Long Haul Routes

While Air Berlin navigates bankruptcy through the German legal system, it has announced that cuts to under-performing long haul routes will take place almost immediately.   The decision comes as a result of a dramatic fall-off in bookings that has taken place since the bankruptcy announcement.

As far as I can tell, here are the canceled routes:

Berlin – Abu Dhabi will be canceled beginning September 17.

Berlin – Chicago will be canceled beginning September 30.

Berlin – Los Angeles will be canceled October 1.

Berlin – San Francisco will be canceled October 1.

Dusseldorf – Boston will be canceled October 1.

For now flights from Berlin to Miami and New York (JFK) remain unaffected as do flights from Dusseldorf to Boston, Fort Myers, Orlando, New York, and Miami.    Also unaffected at this point are flights from Dusseldorf to Cancun, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Varadero, Curacao, and Havana.   I suspect these aforementioned routes won’t stay on the timetable for long but at this point AB plans to operated them as scheduled.

It is widely expected that Lufthansa will come away with a significant stake in Air Berlin after negotiations are completed between the German government, Air Berlin, and Lufthansa.    It also appears that Easyjet will stand to benefit from certain Air Berlin assets as well.  At this point it appears that Ryanair is the odd man out and will not be a benefactor of AB’s bankruptcy.

LUFTHANSA Updates San Jose, California Service

LUFTHANSA Updates San Jose, California Service

Lufthansa has announced that San Jose will no longer be a year-round destination on its timetable.

Service between Frankfurt and San Jose has been cancelled between October 29, 2017 and March 24, 2018. This aligns with Lufthansa’s Winter 17/18 timetable.

However, booking for this nonstop route is possible for travel on March 25 and beyond with roundtrip fares showing to be in the $700 range.

Keep in mind that these flights are operated by Lufthansa’s ‘Cityline’ division, using A340-300 aircraft.
