Earlier today Lufthansa announced a First Class fare sale from the USA to Europe with fares starting as low as $5029.
Lufthansa typically puts First Class Tickets on sale about 2-3 times a year — In the Spring, mid-Summer and during the Holiday Season in the Winter. For this edition the fare sale runs until November 5 and is valid for travel between December 14 and January 7. Specifically, departures can take place between December 14 and January 3 and return flights must occur between December 25 and January 7. Tickets need to be purchased 30 days in advance.
The best published fare during this sale is from Boston to Moscow for $5029 but when I went to ‘sample book’ it, the fare actually came in at $4987.
Other attractive examples (there are many more at Lufthansa.com) are:
Chicago – Prague for $5529
Miami – Venice for $6029
Denver – Copenhagen for $5979
The fare sale credits normal First Class mileage credit so for Miles & More member, that amounts to 300% of miles flown. However, other Star Alliance plans will have varying degrees of how many miles are earned, so please check your respective program for details. Also, be aware that the flights can be operated by Lufthansa, Swiss or United – so you may want to pay special attention when looking at your exact flight options!
A fare sale like this is always a great opportunity to treat yourself to one of travel’s finest experiences. Over the last few months, Lufthansa has been earned several awards for having an outstanding First Class product including SkyTrax’s 5-Star award for best First Class Lounges and 3 American Hospitality Association Awards for Best First Terminal, Best Onboard First Class Product and for their First Class Lounge in New York’s JFK.
Then there is the First Class Duck as well………perhaps the most important reason to experience Lufthansa’s First Class hospitality. 🙂

Lufthansa recently provided an update regarding its fleet and seating capacity for the near future. According to this Bloomberg article and coming as no surprise, Lufthansa looks to increase capacity at the expense of First Class seats.
According to the article, Carsten Spohr who run’s LH’s passenger airline division addressed analysts in London and provided projections for the next 2 years regarding capacity along with other minor updates:
- Capacity (number of seats available) will see a net increase of 1% for 2013. In 2014, LH projects capacity to increase by 5% followed by an additional 4% increase in 2015 and a further 3% increase for 2016. This gain will come from the elimination of First Class cabins on certain routes to Africa, Canada and India.
- Capacity increases will also come as more A380 and 747-8i aircraft are added to the fleet over the coming years while smaller aircraft like the A340 are retired from service. I would suspect that the new Premium Economy seat that is planned for rollout next year will take up a fair amount of space that is freed up by removing the 8 First Class seats from long haul aircraft as well as increasing the amount of 2-class aircraft within the fleet.
- Also as part of Spohr’s update, it looks like Sao Paolo will soon see the 747-8i. My guess is it will be ahead of the World Cup scheduled for June and July 2014. It may be just a matter of waiting for Boeing to deliver the next one.
- He also commented on a potential tie up with Air China and an expand LH’s relationship with ANA.
None of this should come as a major surprise since these moves have been widely expected and discussed for several months.

In case you missed Lufthansa’s tweet or my subsequent retweet earlier this afternoon, Lufthansa has launched a great new tool that will allow their First Class passengers to see whether or not their Lufthansa flight will have the new First Class cabin interior.
You can search by city pairs and date or simply by your LH flight number. The search tool is good for up to 60 days ahead of your flight.
PLEASE be mindful that an aircraft can be substituted at any moment due to capacity or technical issues, however as Lufthansa continues to renovate its long haul fleet, more and more flights will see the new First Class product on a regular basis.
