LUFTHANSA To Provide Inflight Connectivity For Your Mobile Devices

LUFTHANSA To Provide Inflight Connectivity For Your Mobile Devices

Lufthansa has now made it possible for passengers on long-haul flights to use their mobile devices to connect to terrestrial friends, family and others using their existing service provider.

Currently installed and available on a handful of A330 aircraft and others, the service will be made available ‘long-haul’ fleet-wide by the end of the year. The early phase of this rollout will cover flights serving North America and the Middle East.

The technology is provided by AeroMobile, who has contracted with over 200 mobile phone service providers worldwide to make this possible. It is integrated with Lufthansa’s existing FlyNet service.

However voice calls, Skype, Face Time and the like will still not be permitted aboard LH flights. This service will simply allow passengers to use their mobile devices to text, surf the internet, check emails etc.

The pricing of access will depend on your service provider. It will be considered ‘Data Roaming’ which can carry significant charges. Charges will be billed directly by your service provider and added to your normal bill.

Miami – Frankfurt will continue to see the A380 fly the route during the summer timetable.

New York(JFK) – Frankfurt will see the A380 return for the summer for one of the 2 daily JFK-FRA flights.  The A380 will operate on LH400/LH401.

LUFTHANSA To Provide Inflight Connectivity For Your Mobile Devices

LUFTHANSA Announces New CEO

Lufthansa’s Supervisory Board has made official what has been hoped for and speculated about for several weeks.

Carsten Spohr, 47,  has been selected as Lufthansa’s CEO, replacing Christoph Franz who will be leaving his role of CEO on May 1.   It was widely thought that Carsten Spohr was the front runner for the role due to his success at running Lufthansa’s Passenger Airline division.

Mr. Spohr looks to be a popular choice with Airline employees since he had been a pilot for Lufthansa before advancing through leadership positions within the company and many feel that ‘one of their own’ will be running the entire company.

This also bodes well for the continuation of the measures put in place over the last few years to help Lufthansa improve its position in the marketplace as well as to strengthen its balance sheet.

In his comments, Spohr stated “As a Lufthansa man ‘born and bred’, I view the appointment as the new CEO as both an honor and an obligation. I look very much forward to this important task and I am convinced that the company is on the right track. The cornerstones for the future success are in place. Together, we will meet the challenges confidently, willing to embrace change and prepared to deliver on our strategy in order to make our company resilient and ready for the future also beyond 2015.”

Fortunately it looks to be business as usual for LH and no unexpected surprises as far as leadership change is concerned!

Plane-Spotting LUFTHANSA: Some Of My Favorite Shots

Plane-Spotting LUFTHANSA: Some Of My Favorite Shots

I finally had some free time to really start sorting through nearly 6,000 photos that have accumulated over the last 2+ years of my plane-spotting addiction. Lufthansa aircraft alone account for over 2000 images and nearly 60 giga-bytes of space on my hard drives.

Tonight I took some time to sort through my LH shots deleting duplicates and blurred shots. Along the way I pulled a few aside (both new and old) that were among my favorites and thought to put them together for other ‘Avgeeks’ to enjoy. Some you may have seen before, some you may have missed — but in my opinion it is hard to get tired of watching aircraft doing ‘their thing’!

Who knows, I might even be tempted to publish a calendar at some point! 🙂
