Lufthansa Spring Fare Sale To Germany

Lufthansa Spring Fare Sale To Germany

Lufthansa has launched a fare sale between now and April 1 for travel from the USA to Germany during Spring.  The fares are decent, and are appropriate for this time of year.   Why not take advantage of them and enjoy Spring in Germany, eventually all the snow that they had recently will melt and Spring will finally arrive!

As a result of this sale,  Lufthansa fares are lower than most other competitors and are especially attractive to some of the smaller cities in Germany such as Dresden, Dusseldorf, Bremen, Nuremberg etc.  For example, New York to Dusseldorf starts from $759 (round trip/all inclusive).   I looked up several sample itineraries and in most cases Lufthansa’s fares came out as the best.

The fares are valid for travel on Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, Air Canada and United.   Be mindful of this when booking and be aware of who will be operating the flight as it can potentially have an impact on the miles that you earn for your Frequent Flyer account.

Please click here to be taken to Lufthansa’s Fare Sale to see pricing between city pairs.

As with any Fare Sale, terms and conditions apply and are as follows:

Ticket must be purchased by April 1, 2013

You must depart between April 1 and May 16, 2013

You must return between April 7 and June 16, 2013

Tickets must be purchased 7 days ahead of departure.

Fares valid for travel on Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, United and Air Canada.

Saturday night stay required.

Additional terms/conditions exist which can be viewed on the Fare Sale link provided above.

Lufthansa’s Aircraft Help Predict The Weather

Lufthansa’s Aircraft Help Predict The Weather

This can be filed under “Who Knew!”.

An interesting fact you probably were not aware of, but for the last 14 years Lufthansa aircraft have been instrumental in helping improve weather forecasting.    Over this span of time, 350 aircraft have served as remote weather stations with special software that collects meteorological data during flight and transmits it to the geniuses at Lufthansa Systems.   Once at LH Systems, the data is deciphered, formatted and organized in such a way that it is useful to weather services worldwide.

The key piece of this concept is that no additional equipment is required.    Information such as air temperature, barometric pressure, wind direction etc. that is already being gathered by the aircraft for “it’s” own use is simply processed through this special software requiring no additional effort by the crew.

Considering how inaccurate the typical weatherman is, they can use all the help that they can get.   With it’s efforts, Lufthansa Systems suggests that they have been able to actually increase weather forecasting accuracy by 5 to 7%.

LUFTHANSA CARGO Selected Best International Freight Carrier

LUFTHANSA CARGO Selected Best International Freight Carrier

Lufthansa Cargo has earned  yet another award for it’s “Trophy Case” when the Airforwarders Association presented ‘LH’ Cargo with it’s International Freight Airline award.   The award was announced at the Airforwarders Association’s “AIR CARGO 2013” event held in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Customer service, on-time performance, reliability and security were the criteria that was factored into determining the winner.

On hand to accept the award for Cargo was Achim Martinka, VP The Americas, who thanked the group the group on behalf of LH Cargo:   “This accolade is a great reward for the daily efforts put in by  our team – and, moreover, a huge incentive to continue working on further improvement of our services and performance“.

This is the third time that the award has been presented, with Lufthansa Cargo winning it twice.

For those of you not familiar with Lufthansa Cargo, they are one of the world’s largest Air Cargo carriers who’s route network spans the globe.   Lufthansa Cargo reaches 300 destinations in 100 countries with its fleet of MD-11 aircraft along with the ability to send cargo on board Lufthansa and Austrian passenger aircraft.

For you “avgeeks” out there, Lufthansa Cargo has done a spectacular job in providing fans with great behind the scenes access to pilots, destinations and their aircraft.   Their presence on FaceBook and their dedicated channel on YouTube offers great information, video and photos.

I had the rare opportunity to take a behind the scenes tour of Lufthansa Cargo including their cargo warehouses in Frankfurt as well as being on board on an MD-11 Freighter as it was being loaded for it’s flight.   You can see my posts on this visit here:

Lufthansa 747-8i Update: Newest Delivery, Hong Kong and ……. Miami?

Lufthansa 747-8i Update: Newest Delivery, Hong Kong and ……. Miami?

It’s been a busy few days for Lufthansa and their fleet of 747-8i aircraft and a special thanks to the members in the Miles & More forum on FlyerTalk for some of these insights.

The latest developments:

The newest edition, D-ABYG was delivered  earlier this week and is set to take on Lufthansa’s Frankfurt-Hong Kong route starting March 31.

There has been some unconfirmed talk about the 747-8i making a cameo appearance in Miami in the coming months as Miami goes into off-peak season for Lufthansa.   The 747-8i would replace the A380 during certain parts of the schedule.   There has been no official word from Lufthansa, but my sources in the past have been nothing short of very credible when it comes to these kind of scenarios.

Lastly, it looks as though the 747-8i’s appearance in Chicago will be delayed into late summer or potentially early fall.   The issue lies with certain waivers that need to be granted by the FAA that would allow the 747-8i to operate out of Chicago.   The 747-8i would be the largest aircraft to visit Chicago and there are some issues regarding the use of taxiways between the arrival terminal (T5) and the departure terminal (T1).   When an international flight arrives in Chicago, it parks at the International Terminal (T5), and in Lufthansa’s case, their departures take place from Terminal 1 (Concourse B).   Apparently it will be a tight squeeze for a 747-8i to taxi from T5 to T1  so special provisions need to be put in place ahead of the 747-8i’s visit to the windy city.

BLUE LEGEND USERS: MARCH Codeshare Flight Numbers For United and US Airways

BLUE LEGEND USERS: MARCH Codeshare Flight Numbers For United and US Airways

Since Lufthansa launched BLUE LEGENDS, I’ve had many USA based Blue Legend users email me voicing their disappointment that they could not participate actively when flying on non Lufthansa operated flights in the USA. In order to “Check In” for a flight on Blue Legends, a Lufthansa flight number is required. This included codeshare flight numbers for flights operated by United and US Airways.

To that end, I’ve been able to assemble a complete list of codeshare flight numbers that Lufthansa uses for flights operated by United and US Airways. I’ve made these lists available as dedicated pages on my website.

For United Operated Flights: “BLUE LEGENDS: Lufthansa Codeshare Flight Numbers For United Flights

For US Airways Operated Flights:  “BLUE LEGENDS: Lufthansa Codeshare Flight Numbers For US Airway Flights

There are a few things to keep in mind with these lists:

Lufthansa does not have a codeshare flight number for every United or US Airways operated flight.

Lufthansa updates their codeshare flight numbers monthly and I’ll update my list to reflect the changes (I’ll let you know when I’ve updated the pages)

The list only contains the LH codeshare flight number, origin and destination and does not contain departure or arrival time information. I’m working on adding that piece for future updates. For now I suggest you “Google” the LH codeshare flight number to make sure it corresponds to the actual flight you are on.

If you are unfamiliar with Blue Legends, I encourage you to visit the app’s website or read my post on Blue Legends.

If you have any questions or need help with Blue Legends, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment on this post.
