Waiting in my e-mail from yesterday was one from Lufthansa and their suggestions for Christmas Market destinations in Germany and cities throughout Europe.
Winter in Europe is one of my favorite times to visit and it is primarily for the Christmas Markets, fantastic snow capped scenery and delicious mulled/spiced wine that I enjoy during my stay! One of my favorite visits to Europe during Winter was my visit to Nuremburg’s “Christkindlesmarkt”.
For those of you who are not familiar with Christmas Markets, it is a celebration put on by cities, towns and villages throughout Europe that celebrate the Holidays. They usually run from the end of November through the first week of the new year. The markets are full of fantastic food and drink, plentiful shopping (especially for local specialities) and entertainment. It may be cold this time of year, but you hardly feel the weather when you immerse yourself into one of these Markets.
In their email, Lufthansa listed some of their Christmas Market ideas for Germany and cities throughout Europe. This by far is not a complete list as their are hundreds of Christmas Markets taking place in Europe during the Holidays.

The links in the image do not work since I took a screenshot of the graphic, however you can visit the dedicated Lufthansa Christmas Market Webpage. As a bonus, by visiting their webpage, you’ll find recipes for Glühwein (Mulled Wine) and Lebkuchen (Gingerbread).

Lufthansa is currently running a Sweepstakes on their Facebook page that will award 3 lucky winners each with 30,000 miles for their ‘Miles & More’ Accounts.
To enter, you need to visit Lufthansa’s Facebook page, and “Like It”. Once you do that, click on the “App Around The World” application tab to be taken to the contest’s entry page. Or you can simply click here to be taken directly to the contest’s page. Just make sure that you first “LIKE” Lufthansa’s Facebook page.
Once you’ve reached the contest page, you’ll need to complete 4 puzzles in order to complete a Japan themed phrase (think of it like Wheel of Fortune). The puzzles are not the easiest, but manageable within a few minutes. With each successful completion of a puzzle, you’ll gain the letters you need to complete the phrase which will be your entry into the contest.
This is the Contest’s “Homepage” (notice the 4 puzzle tabs on the right):

The contest ends at 4pm Eastern Time on November 26. 3 Winners will be randomly selected from eligible entries on November 27 and will be contacted via email (your Facebook account’s email address) shortly thereafter.
The contest is open to ‘US Residents Only’ which is rare. Normally, most Lufthansa contests are not available to those of us in the USA.

On Lufthansa’s flight LH403 on November 18, the Co-Pilot on the flight from Newark to Frankfurt fell ill with a serious migraine which left the aircraft to be piloted by only the captain. Although it is perfectly safe to have only one pilot fly the aircraft, having someone in the cockpit to assist no doubt helps, especially should something happen to the remaining pilot.
Everything worked out well, as a passenger who happens to be a 767 pilot (who is also certified for the 747) for a US based carrier was on board and offered to assist the Captain.
Due to the nature of the medical emergency, the flight diverted safely to Dublin, Ireland (morning of November 19) to ensure that the co-pilot received immediate medical assistance. After a delay of a few hours, the flight continued on to Frankfurt.
This Journal.ie article contains a voice transcript of the flight as it approached Dublin.

Lufthansa Cargo proudly reported today that it has received one of the 2012 ÖkoGlobe awards that recognize achievement and advancement in the mobility and transport industry.
Lufthansa Cargo was selected for the award thanks to it’s weight-saving Jettainer cargo containers (Jettainer is a Lufthansa Cargo subsidiary) that are manufactured from composite materials and are 13 kilograms lighter than their aluminum predecessors. In all, Lufthansa Cargo will have approximately 5000 of these containers in use over the next few years.
Here is an example of the award winning design (courtesy of Lufthansa Cargo):

Doing the math (based on 5000 containers in service), Lufthansa Cargo can potentially eliminate approximately 65,000Kg or 143,300 pounds of unnecessary weight from their container “fleet”. With 15,500 Lufthansa Cargo flights each year, and with Jet Fuel currently costing €650 per ton, you can quickly see just how much impact a lighter container can make on the bottom line!
Lufthansa Cargo Manager Markus Witte stated in the awards ceremony held in Cologne that “It is becoming increasingly evident that the mobility industry is investing substantially in innovation and making immense efforts proactively in order to reduce CO2 emissions. We are proud that Lufthansa Cargo has won recognition for its lightweight containers with this environmental award, which has previously been captured mainly by the automotive industry. That motivates us to continue developing innovative and environmentally friendly ideas.”
Lufthansa Cargo placed 3rd in the awards ceremony, behind innovations from Volkswagen and Deutsche Post.
When I was in Frankfurt a couple of weeks ago visiting Lufthansa Cargo, I saw these containers throughout the facility. They are made from a composite material that reminded me of something along the lines of a plastic coated canvas or tarp. It was fairly rigid, yet easy enough to bend, but extremely durable and appeared quite unbreakable.
