New Lounge & Inflight ‘Amenities’ For Kids Traveling On Lufthansa

New Lounge & Inflight ‘Amenities’ For Kids Traveling On Lufthansa

Lufthansa has started giving out ‘Summer Kits’ to kids who visit Lufthansa Lounges in Frankfurt or Munich.   These kits contain Coloring Books, Baseball Caps and a variety of puzzles and other trinkets designed to occupy their time so Mom and Dad can enjoy their lounge visit that much more…. 😉

Lufthansa has also introduced a new book series designed for children.   These books are available on board and available in German and English.   These ‘Pixi’ books provide short stories about LH, LH Mascots and aviation in general.   There will be multiple volumes of these books available during the next few months.

In addition, LH is introducing a new app designed to follow up ‘Take Off’ which was their first version of a children’s app.   The new app, dubbed ‘Super JetFriends’, targets the 7 to 11 year old demographic and challenges them with a variety of scenarios.   The app should be available for iOS and Android in early August.

Looking at all these products makes me think back 35 years ago when I began flying as an 8 year old…..I was damn lucky to just have a comic book and a ‘Road & Track’ to take aboard!

What do you remember as your ‘inflight entertainment’ when you were a kid?

Today in Lufthansa History: First Baby Born In Flight

Today in Lufthansa History: First Baby Born In Flight

On July 28, 1965 while aboard flight 408 between Frankfurt and New York, a mother entered labor and delivered a baby (what else would it be, right?), marking the first time in Lufthansa’s history that a baby would enter the world during an LH flight.

According to the archives, no doctors were aboard and the flight crew helped the Mother and Baby rest comfortably after the somewhat unexpected event.   Doctors aboard another LH flight traveling from Munich to New York radioed over to assist the flight crew during the delivery.

According to Lufthansa, 10 babies have been born on board, with the last birth taking place on July 5, 2010 during a flight from Mumbai to Frankfurt.

Now you know…..

Lufthansa Cabin Crew Strike Threat Recedes

Lufthansa Cabin Crew Strike Threat Recedes

The union representing Lufthansa’s Cabin Crews has announced that due to the constructive negotiations that continue to take place with LH, there is little to no threat of strikes in the foreseeable future.

Previously, the union had set a loose target of mid to late July to assess the potential for strikes.

This comes as welcomed news since their Pilot colleagues who are in their own labor negotiations are optimistic as well that negotiations can continue without the need for strikes.

The unions will be meeting with LH’s executive board in the first week of August to discuss progress.

For us passengers, it looks like strike-free travel should be in place through the end of summer.

In case you missed my previous post eluding to the new fare structure rolling out for Lufthansa passengers traveling within Europe, it has now been put in force.

Beginning July 28 (Europe Central Time), Lufthansa passengers who book flights taking place in Europe on October 1 or later will have a simplified 3-tiered fare menu:  Light, Classic, and Flex.

At the end of this post, you’ll find 2 charts provided by Lufthansa that help put these new fares into perspective with benefits, costs, etc.

A brief description of each fare level:

LIGHT:

1 piece of carry-on luggage up t0 8 kilograms / 17 pounds.

Fares will be non-refundable and non-changeable.

For additional fees you can select your seat prior to check-in, check a bag (up to 50 kilograms / 23 pounds) or book seats with extra leg room such as bulkhead and exit row seating.

Eligible for Award and Status miles.

CLASSIC:

1 piece of luggage up to 23 kilograms / 50 pounds.

1 carry-on up to 8 kilograms / 17 pounds.

Free seat selection at the time of booking.

For additional fees you will be able to check additional baggage or select seats with extra leg room such as bulkhead or exit row seating.

1 carry on up to 8 kilograms  17 / pounds.

Free seat selection at the time of booking.

For additional fees you will be able to check additional luggage or select seats with extra leg room such as bulkhead or exit row seating.

50% Award Mile Bonus.

Regardless of which fare class is booked, Miles and More members will retain their status benefits so access to lounges, priority boarding, priority security etc. will not be affected.   Star Alliance Gold members also will be able to use their benefits as well, including access to Senator lounges, priority check-in, etc.   However, regardless of status level, passengers will be required to pay for a seat if they wish to choose a seat at booking under a ‘Light Fare’ and will need to pay if checking a bag.

Additionally, onboard catering will not be impacted by which fare class you select.   All passengers in Economy will receive the same level of beverage and meal service.

The following charts  should clarify any questions that you may have, including additional costs that are involved:

Pilot Union Offers New Negotiations – Strike Threats Disappear

Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has approached Lufthansa with an offer for new negotiations regarding the ongoing dispute over the retirement benefits for pilots.

Once LH has a chance to review the latest offers coming from the Union, dates will be set for continuing negotiations.

At least for the next several weeks, the threat of strikes by the pilots has disappeared.
