Each month LUFTHANSA updates the status of their Business Class retrofit progress across the long haul fleet. This month’s update confirms that 73 long-haul aircraft now feature the new Business Class cabin. That means that 3 additional aircraft now sport the new Business Class Cabin as compared to their March update. However there are 2 more that will enter service in April —
In addition to the 3 retrofitted aircraft, Lufthansa’s beautiful Retro-Livery 747-8i D-ABYT (Click here for Gallery) and A380 D-AIMM will also enter service in April, bringing the total to 75 aircraft with the new business class cabin.
The aircraft registration codes that are highlighted in green represent the 3 newly retrofitted aircraft.
Here is the breakdown by Aircraft type and then by specific aircraft:
Airbus A330: D-AIKP, D-AIKQ, D-AIKR, D-AIKS (These 4 planes were line-fit meaning that they were delivered by Airbus with the seats installed). D-AIKA, D-AIKB, D-AIKD, D-AIKE, D-AIKF, D-AIKG, D-AIKH, D-AIKI, D-AIKK, D-AIKM, D-AIKN, D-AIKO have all been retrofit by Lufthansa Technik. This represents 74% of the A330 fleet.
Airbus A340-300: D-AIGM, D-AIGS, D-AIGO, D-AIGV, D-AIGT, D-AIGN, D-AIFE, D-AIGZ, D-AIFC, D-AIGX, D-AIGU, D-AIGL, D-AIFA, D-AIFD, D-AIFF, D-AIGW, D-AIGY (All Retrofit).
Airbus A340-600: D-AIHE, D-AIHF, D-AIHK, D-AIHN, D-AIHQ, D-AIHR, D-AIHS, D-AIHV, D-AIHW, D-AIHX, D-AIHB, D-AIHC, D-AIHD (All Retrofit).
Airbus A380: D-AIMM, D-AIMK, D-AIML, D-AIMB, D-AIME,D-AIMJ, D-AIMC, D-AIMI, D-AIMG, D-AIMF. MK, ML, and MM were line fit while all other A380s were retrofitted.
Boeing 747-8i: All 17 aircraft have the new Business Class. D-ABYT will enter service in April and the last 747-8i, D-ABYU will join and complete the fleet on May 1.
Boeing 747-400: D-ABVW (Retrofit).

Lufthansa announced today that it has cancelled the airline’s 60th Anniversary celebrations that were set to take place on April 15. Originally, plans had called for a gathering at Hangar 7 (The A380’s home) in Frankfurt where special guest, Chancellor Angela Merkel was to join in celebrating the airline’s jubilee.
The cancellation is obviously out of respect to the victims who were lost in the Germanwings tragedy last week and to their families that survive them.
Instead, family members and friends will gather at the Cologne Cathedral on April 17 to take part in a memorial and remembrance service for those that were lost. The memorial service is being organized by Chancellor Merkel’s office and by the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In light of the Germanwings disaster, Lufthansa Group has installed with immediate effect 2 new policies covering cockpit personnel and aircraft security.
The most important part of the policy is the introduction of the ‘Rule Of Two’ policy which requires that at least 2 people are in the cockpit at ANY time. Should one of the pilots need to leave the cockpit, a senior (and authorized) cabin crew member will step into the cockpit until the pilot returns. This is similar to the policy found in the US and several countries around the world.
Lufthansa has also created the role of ‘Group Safety Pilot’. This role will govern and review all safety procedures in place. In addition, this role will be charged with the responsibility to continue to evolve safety policy and procedures. This role will cover all LH Group carriers.

Lufthansa went a bit out of their way today during a flight between Chicago and Munich.
Flight LH435 amended its flight plan and took a small detour near Iceland and descended to 12,600 feet to take in the Solar Eclipse that took place earlier today. The timing of the flight was nearly perfect as far as seeing the peak of the Eclipse.
Planning ahead, LH outfitted the aircraft with a special informational card along with safety ‘glasses’ so that passengers could take advantage of their proximity to this rare event. They were also given the option of being woken up to take in the event, which happened about 6 hours into the flight.

Lufthansa has announced that up to half of their long-haul schedule for Saturday, March 21 may be adversely affected due to the scheduled strike. 86 out of 160 flights are expected to be flown.
