In what was orginally designed to impact flights flown by medium and short-haul aircraft, the strike called by Lufthansa’s Pilot Union has now spread to the long haul fleet.
In an updated timetable from LH, most if not all of their long haul flights departing Frankfurt and a few from Munich are cancelled for Tuesday,October 21, 2014. You can find the most updated timetable reflecting the cancellations here.
Most flights scheduled to depart LH’s long-haul gateways (North America, Asia, etc) on October 21 are scheduled to operate their flights to Frankfurt, Munich and Dusseldorf. Most of the aircraft will be spending the night at their gateway cities tonight due to cancellations today making them available to fly back tomorrow.
However there are a few cancellations in that group including Johannesburg-FRA, Hong Kong – FRA, Sao Paulo – FRA, Shanghai – FRA and Seoul – MUC. There may be others so PLEASE check the link provided above or to check a specific flight, please use Lufthansa’s Flight Status Tool.

Lufthansa has published a list of all flights that have been cancelled thus far as a result of the Strike that is scheduled to take place from 1p Monday through midnight Tuesday (Frankfurt/CET). The strike’s focus is targeted at Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and Embraer operated flights. This translates into most short and medium haul flights being cancelled.

The union representing Lufthansa’s Pilots has sabotaged the airline once again by announcing a strike that is set to take up the better part of 2 days.
The walk out is set to occur from 1 PM on Monday October 20 and last until Midnight Tuesday, October 21 (Central European Time). The strike covers Lufthansa’s entire network and is not limited to just certain airports, etc.
The strike will affect a large part of the fleet, specifically targeting Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and Embraer regional aircraft. Lufthansa in their information is stating that 747 flights are affected, but that may be a typo. The Union’s own webpage only made mention of 3 types that I listed above and made no reference to the 747.

In past strikes, the Union’s bark has been far worse than its bite thanks to Lufthansa Pilots putting their priorities in order and still flying their routes instead of listening to their own union. Sitting at home on a Saturday afternoon waiting for tonight’s Notre Dame upset of Florida State, I decided to ring United’s 1K Desk to ask why they insisted on making me look bad…….
Back on July 1, I posted the fact that United was finally moving to an electronic method to redeem Global Premier Upgrades for use on Lufthansa operated flights. That post was prompted by the assurance from 2 United reps, including a supervisor that the electronic process would start on August 1. Well, that obviously never happened.
So I call back on August 29, asking about the delay and I was assured that it was about to go ‘live’ and that passengers could start to use the new system on September 3, +/- a few days. So I shouted from the mountain tops that the process was finally here.
Well Labor Day came and went and no sign of the new system, even though every Mileage Plus associate has been trained in the new system and are ready to use it.
So today I call and ask if there are any updates and spoke for a while to a wonderful agent who had a great sense of humor. After letting her know that my expectations were set for August 3rd and September 3rd, she said suggested that the new date could be ‘Maybe-never 3rd’. Though I wasn’t happy about the lack of a start date, I couldn’t help to laugh at her punch-line.
So as it stands, there is NO FIRM DATE for the launch of the electronic process. The lesson learned here is for me is to NOT shout ‘Electronic GPUs For LH Flights’ in a crowded ‘blogosphere’, especially when basing my announcements on what I perceived to be factual and accurate information from an airline.
The next time I talk about it will be when I can point to screen shots proving that the process is finally in place….
