Earlier today, Boeing released its forecast for the commercial aviation market for the next 20 years. This typically discusses what Boeing sees coming for the industry including demand for certain type of aircraft and the demographics of future customers.
What was noticeably absent from the 2017 version of this forecast was any talk of the 747. They have acknowledged that the 747 platform is being wound down, without any serious orders forthcoming.
For the first time in decades, Boeing is now looking to a future driven only by 2-engine aircraft, primarily the 737, 787 and upcoming 777x platforms. The forecast suggest that the aircraft market over the next 20 years will require over $6 trillion in new aircraft deliveries.

Of course this makes all the sense in the world since technology has allowed 2 engines to do the work of 4, and deliver passengers to their destinations in more comfort and safety than ever before. But for the aviation romanticists in the world that have always seen the 747 as the most beautiful aircraft in the sky, such a sobering moment doesn’t pass easily.
In their comments, Boeing stated that they were simply being realists in their projections and see that the era of 4 engine aircraft is drawing to an end. I guess all that’s left is to enjoy the Queen of the Skies for as long we can….

In ceremonies held during the Paris Airshow at Le Bourget, Lufthansa and Austrian walked away with impressive awards from SKYTRAX, affirming their dominant position in European aviation.
Austrian was awarded ‘Best Airline Staff Service In Europe’ that includes staff and crew both on the ground and in the air. This marks the 4th consecutive year that ‘OS’ has been given that honor. Some might consider this kind of streak a dynasty.
Austrian’s COO Andreas Otto and Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr join in receiving Austrian’s award.
Lufthansa walked onto the stage to accept several awards. The most meaningful being recognized as the ‘Best Airline In Europe’. In addition to this award, Lufthansa also received hardware for being the ‘Best Airline In Western Europe’ and for ‘Best First Class Dining’.

18 million people from 160 countries took part in the annual Skytrax balloting. SKYTRAX has been rating and awarding Airline performance since 1999.

United is once again selling miles with attractive bonuses……
This time, it’s a fairly straight forward bonus grid. Purchase between 5,000 and 24,000 miles and get a 35% bonus. Purchase between 25,000 and 85,000 miles and get a 75% bonus.
Obviously the better ratio is for the larger purchase….
Buying 24,000 miles for $840.00 will earn you a total of 32,400 miles which boils down to 2.59 cents per mile.
Maxing out at 85,000 miles for $2975 will earn you a total of 148,750 miles which equates to 2 cents per mile. There is a bit of tax involved as well, so your CPM (cents per mile) value comes down a little bit.
The sale runs through July 3, 2017, so if you’re short a few miles in your UA account for that Lufthansa First Class seat, here’s a good opportunity to address that problem…..
