Avgeeks: Ask ‘Siri’ This Question…..

Avgeeks: Ask ‘Siri’ This Question…..

Avgeek?  Have an iPhone?

Ask Siri:

“What’s Flying Overhead?”

This little gem of a question was brought to my attention by a friend who uses it once in awhile to see what aircraft are coming into our local airport or flying nearby.  Having used an iPhone for years, I never knew Siri had the ability to see the sky and report her findings.

Though it’s not nearly impressive as the ‘binocular view’ afforded to us by FlightRadar24, it’s still a slick feature that Siri has available for those of us who are curious as to what is 35,000 feet overhead.

The screen that Siri returns is 2 pages long, so you’ll need to scroll down to see all the data. The data is compiled by Wolfram|Alpha and presented in the following manner:

…and scroll down to see this screen

I’m not sure if other ‘Digi-Gals’ such as Alexa or others offer this kind of tool, but for an avgeek it’s something worth knowing about if you use Apple products.

LUFTHANSA Will Be Tweaking The New Livery

LUFTHANSA Will Be Tweaking The New Livery

Lufthansa has confirmed that it will adjust the new livery after seeing it in action over the past few weeks.

The biggest criticism that most people had was that the Blue on the tail was too dark, and would look black in many cases.    Lufthansa agrees and has decided to modify the Blue to be a lighter color that will reflect as a proper blue in most daylight conditions.

No time frame has been set as Lufthansa wants this update to be the last one for a long time.   I suspect it will be several weeks of trial and error before they settle on the final shade of blue.

When I saw it in Frankfurt, it was fine in direct sunlight, however in any overcast condition, the blue did indeed become very dark and unless you knew the tail was supposed to be blue, it would be easy to mistake it for a black tail.

So when all is said and done, what matters most is that my ‘Herpa’ desktop model of the original, darker new livery has just become an instant collectors item!  🙂

SWISS’ New First Class Lounge Opens Monday!

SWISS’ New First Class Lounge Opens Monday!

Swiss has announced the long-awaited opening of their new First Class Lounge at Zurich Airport.   The new lounge is located in Terminal A and promises to deliver as great an experience as their fantastic First Class Lounge in Terminal E.

The lounge officially opens on Monday, and will boast 7,000 square feet of space for First Class and HON Circle passengers.

The lounge will feature it’s own Security Checkpoint and will allow for First Class passengers arriving in Zurich to be driven directly to the lounge vs. having to navigate the terminal on foot.   Passengers can also be driven to their long haul flights that usually depart from Terminal E.   Last year I was driven from Terminal E to my flight to JNB leaving from B, and it was much, much nicer than having to take the tram from E to B.

The lounge will also feature other wonderful amenities such as:

  • Barista Station
  • A La Carte Dining Room as well as a visible cooking station where you can see your food being prepared.
  • Winter Coat Storage for passengers departing ZRH for warmer destinations (LX will hang on to your coat until you return).
  • Relaxation Room w/ loungers.
  • Smoker’s Lounge with its own dedicated Whiskey Bar
  • Business Zone
  • Conference Room
  • Shower Rooms

The following photos (courtesy of SWISS), provide a hint at what awaits passengers next week:

For those of you that have visited the First Class Lounge in ‘E’, this one will look very familiar.   According to SWISS, then new lounge in ‘A’ was heavily inspired by the Terminal E version.
