Anchorage Plane Spotting 2014 Edition – Part I

Anchorage Plane Spotting 2014 Edition – Part I

A  brief post this morning since I’m up in Anchorage on a part Mileage Run / part Plane Spotting trip.    After my first trip to this fantastic city last year it was an easy decision to come back.   However this year I waited until April instead of January so no sub-freezing temperatures and blizzard on this go-around.

I’ve been lucky with weather so far and even had the good fortune for the winds to turn 180 degrees today which increased the amount of traffic that I would see on the North/South runway.  Last time I was only able to shoot take offs, but this time Mother Nature gave me a hand and turned the winds to blow out of the South which forced the ‘heavies’ to land in front of me for half the day as well as taxi down to my end of the runway prior to takeoff.    No complaints from me!

These images are just a few of my favorites from Day 1.  I’m testing some new equipment ahead of my trip to Europe next week so there was a bit of a learning curve to get through today.    After 900 shots, I’ve narrowed it down to a few dozen at this point.  Fortunately I have another entire day to capture a few more ‘moments’.

LUFTHANSA: Early Bird Fall Fare Specials To Europe

LUFTHANSA: Early Bird Fall Fare Specials To Europe

Each year Lufthansa conducts an Early Bird Fall Fare Sale and provides attractive fares to those already planning trips for the 3rd and 4th quarter.  Last year the sale was held in July so this year’s version is even an “Earlier Bird” sale.

Budapest seems to be the best deal during this sale with fares as low as $830 from Chicago and and only $930 from Los Angeles.  Other USA gateways to Budapest run in the low $1000 range.

Other deals are available between the US and most of Lufthansa’s European destinations and in most cases fares are running between $1100 (East Coast/Midwest departures) to $1300 (West Coast departures).

The Terms/Conditions are as follows:

Tickets must be purchased by MAY 8, 2014.

You must depart between AUGUST 24 and OCTOBER 25, 2014.

You must return between AUGUST 31 and JANUARY 25, 2015.

Tickets must be purchased 14 days ahead of departure.

Keep in mind that these fares are valid for travel on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, United or Air Canada so be mindful when booking your trip.   I say this because the amount of miles you’ll earn for your Frequent Flyer account can vary widely based on the carrier who operates your flight.  In some cases, deep discount economy fares like this may earn 50% or even no miles depending on the program that you credit miles to.  If you are uncertain, please let me know and I can help you figure out the best combination for earning miles.
