A Week On Safari In Africa: Here’s A Taste Of Upcoming Reports

A Week On Safari In Africa: Here’s A Taste Of Upcoming Reports

You may or may not have noticed, but LufthansaFlyer.com was fairly dormant for most of the last 10 days.    It wasn’t for a lack of content or news regarding LH……

What created this vacuum in the blogosphere was the fact that my wife and I spent an unbelievable week on Safari in Africa.   With polygraph attach, I can say that it was by far THE……BEST……VACATION…..that I’ve ever been on.   What we saw, who we met and what we observed was unlike anything else that either one of us has ever experienced.

I do know that my cameras came back with 10 full memory cards and approximately 6500 photos and 4 hours of video.   The prospects of sorting through all of it feels akin to putting a firehose in my mouth and turning the valve.

I’m having trouble where to start my series of trip reports due to the aforementioned statements.

The week on Safari in Africa was framed with 3 long haul flights by Lufthansa and 1 by United.   I changed our outbound flight from the USA to UA since LH pilots had announced a long haul strike for the day were flying to FRA.  I did not want to jeopardize our trip so was proactive but in hindsight we would have been fine on the LH flights since most long haul flights operated as usual.

As I sort through content and photos, I’ll use this post as an introduction and future installments will go in more details on our experiences.  I’ll go into much greater details on the fantastic lodge, our hosts and the wonderful creatures that we saw from sun up to sun down (and later) each day!

So for now, enjoy a small appetizer of what my cameras captured……..

a group of lions lying in dry grass

A Lioness guards her pride while they rest after a successful hunt…..

a leopard lying down with its mouth open

a leopard eating a deer in a tree

One of the first things we saw, a Leopard guarding his kill from a pack of Hyenas….

a monkey sitting in a tree

A monkey takes a moment…..

an elephant walking in the grass

Taking a breather before continuing his dinner.

a group of buffaloes in a field

Of all the ‘Big 5’, the buffalo is perhaps the most dangerous.

a rhinoceros lying in the shade of trees

A rare sighting as Rhinos tend not to lay down.

two lions lying in the grass

Kings of the jungle caught having a ‘moment’…..

a group of zebras standing together

One of my favorite moments as the Zebras almost appear to pose….Why does the one on the right remind me of Jerry Lewis……

a cheetah sitting next to a tree

A cheetah ponders her options prior to stalking her prey……

an elephant drinking water from a pool

An adolescent Elephant uses our plunge pool as an open bar…….

a river with trees and a cloudy sky

It wasn’t all ‘claws and paws’, the scenery and sunsets were spectacular.

LUFTHANSA Long Haul Changes Part II: A380 Premium Economy Rollout & Service Update

LUFTHANSA Long Haul Changes Part II: A380 Premium Economy Rollout & Service Update

Following up on Part I of Lufthansa’s Long Haul changes for 2015 that dealt with the 747-400 and removal of First Class cabins, Part II looks specifically at A380 operations. This includes the timing of Premium Economy rollout as well as an update on the A380 taking over a few 747-8i routes.

Here is an update to the A380 route ‘map’. Beginning in late march, the A380 will replace the 747-8i on the following routes:

March 29: Frankfurt – Los Angeles (LH456 & LH 457). This is the mid-afternoon LAX departure.
April 16: Frankfurt – Beijing.
April 26: Frankfurt – Seoul (ICN).

Here is the most recent schedule for Premium Economy rollout for the A380.  The seating configuration will be 8 First Class / 78 Business Class / 52 Premium Economy / 371 Economy.  (Click here for my earlier post showing the Premium Economy seating maps):

March 29:  Frankfurt – Los Angeles (LH456 & LH457).

March 29:  Frankfurt – Seoul (ICN).

April 16:  Frankfurt – Beijing.

April 22: Frankfurt – Delhi.

April 22:  Frankfurt – Houston.

April 22:  Frankfurt – Johannesburg.

April 22:  Frankfurt – Miami.

April 22:  Frankfurt – New York JFK (LH400 and LH401).

April 22:  Frankfurt – San Francisco.

April 22:  Frankfurt – Shanghai.

April 22:  Frankfurt – Singapore.

You may be wondering how 8 A380 aircraft will all debut Premium Economy exactly on the same day.   In fact, the Premium Economy seats will be gradually phased in a few days / weeks prior to the official launch date.   In the event that Premium Economy seats will be on an aircraft/flight prior to the official launch date, LH will provide passengers with complimentary upgrades and offers to upgrade to Y+ on a flight by flight basis.   The firm dates listed above are the dates loaded into LH’s reservation system for purposes of booking Premium Economy.

LUFTHANSA Long Haul Changes Part I: 747-400s Lose First Class Cabins & Add Premium Economy for 2015.

LUFTHANSA Long Haul Changes Part I: 747-400s Lose First Class Cabins & Add Premium Economy for 2015.

Lufthansa has provided a thorough update for its 2015 timetable that will see substantial changes to fleet operations on long haul flights around the world.   The changes include the removal of First Class seats from 747-400 aircraft, the introduction Premium Economy cabins throughout the long haul fleet and minor adjustments in Business Class / Economy Class seat inventory.

The announcement, first made on October 9, was quite lengthy and covered all of LH’s long haul fleet so I decided to break up the information into separate posts in the hopes that it is easier to absorb.   This installment covers the 747-400 fleet, while future posts will cover other aircraft types.

The following routes will see the removal of First Class cabins on the 747-400 aircraft that fly these routes.  Initially these aircraft will have Business and Economy class seats only (67 Business Seats / 322 Economy Seats per aircraft), however beginning in August Premium Economy seats will begin to appear on these routes (67 Business Seats / 32 Premium Economy Seats / 272 Economy Seats per aircraft).

Frankfurt – Orlando beginning on May 15, 2015.
