Iceland’s Bardarbunga Volcano has been making news all week as 1000s of minor earthquakes began rattling the region. On Saturday, the volcano began to ‘officially’ erupt which has prompted Iceland to close a small part of the airspace near the volcano as a precaution. Thus far, the closure has not affected air traffic.
The the closed airspace covers a 100 mile x 140 mile perimeter around the volcano. Iceland also raised their aviation alert to “RED” indicated that they expect a significant eruption which will expel dangerous ash into the atmosphere.
If you recall, back in 2010, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul erupted which affected over 100,000 flights and millions of passengers. That eruption also wreaked havoc with airline profits and aircraft.
If your near term travels involve flying the North Atlantic corridor, basically the route used by Airlines flying between the USA and Europe, you may want to start paying attention to this event and perhaps plan a contingency in the event of an eruption that cripples travel.
If the situation deteriorates, Airlines will begin to allow passengers to rebook or cancel their travel plans without assessing any fees or penalties. I suspect that this event will play itself out in the next few days so be prepared!

Apologies for not getting this out sooner as I was tied up away from a Wifi connection for most of today…
If your plans call for you to be in Italy tomorrow, be prepared for what is basically going to be a nationwide strike by anyone who works in a transportion related field.
Specific to air travel , Airport personnel at all Italian airports are expected to walk off the job beginning at midnight local time on May 30 and be on strike for 24 hours. In addition to the airport workers being on strike, there will also be a nationwide strike that will affect all rail and bus operations throughout the country during the day as well. On top of that, several Italian airlines have indicated that their employees will join the strike in solidarity. Anything to miss a day at work I guess…..
If your travel plans include flying on Lufthansa please check the status of your flight using this link. Should your flight be cancelled, you will be able to rebook your ticket or request a refund. You can contact Lufthansa’s Italy service center on 199 400 044 24/hrs a a day should you need further help with your travel plans.
As far as I can tell, Lufthansa has already started to cancel SOME flights scheduled for tomorrow and I expect that more cancellations will be added as the strike approaches.

Over the last few years I’ve become somewhat partial to Hyatt properties and seek them out as my first choice whenever I travel. Recently, one of my favorite properties announced a great new amenity for their guests.
The Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon / Hong Kong has recently begun providing their guests with complimentary use of smartphones during their stay. The phones provide unlimited access to the internet, a Hong Kong City Guide and unlimited calling to the USA, Singapore, Australia, the UK and China.
After staying at Hyatt Properties around the world including Istanbul, London, Singapore, Dubai and Hamburg (next month), this Hyatt property thus far remains my favorite – both for location and quality of staff and product.
You can see the Hyatt Regency in the top left corner, the building is lit up like a ‘T’
One logistic that always seems to create additional expense and stress for travelers is being able to stay connected with your own phone when abroad. If you’re not careful, it’s easy to run up hundreds of dollars in roaming data and voice charges with minimal effort. With this new program, it’s one less thing to worry about.
Among all the amenities that hotels offer such as complimentary bottles of wine and fruit plates, lounge access, etc., this in my opinion ranks among the best perk that can be offered to hotel guests. It’s functional and practical…..much more so than a plate of cheese and turn down service! 🙂
