Can A Car Survive A 747’s Jet Blast?

I don’t know how I have managed not to see this Top Gear episode previously (I thought I’ve seen each one 3 times at this point!). On one of yesterday’s episodes they took a Virgin Atlantic 747 (there’s video of the Upper Class Cabin) and had rolled cars behind the 747 to demonstrate the effect of jet blast. I know that 747’s have a little bit of thrust, but this video from the episode certainly put things into perspective (especially since only 2 of the 747’s engines were run up). HINT: Don’t try this at home….but if you do, please let me know because if you have a 747 at home, I need to be your new best friend!

Enjoy the video:

United Makes The World Smaller, Then Bigger…All In 1 Week

Over the past couple of weeks, United had managed to somehow shrink the world in which we fly when they recalculated distances between cities for the purposes of earning miles.

After hearing about it, AND LOUDLY, from their elite travelers, United has inflated the globe back to its original size and all is well in the world again.

Here is a link from SFgate.com going into it in more detail.

Frankfurt Likely To Lose Battle To Operate Overnight Cargo Flights

On Wednesday, a judge in Leipzig presiding over the hearing to determine whether or not Frankfurt Airport can use its new runway for cargo flights between 11p and 5a suggested that the airport may lose its battle.

Judge Ruediger Rubel suggested that the residents living near the runway have a right to noise protection and therefore may prevail in their suit against Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt’s Airport. In his comments, the judge suggested that cargo traffic at the airport is not so busy or necessary that it requires late night operations. What is at stake is the ability for 17 cargo flights to operate between 11:00p and 5:00a.

As part of the ongoing battle between the airport and residents, the court may also restrict airport operations during other times in the late evening and early morning hours.

The court in Leipzig confirmed that it will issue its final decision on April 4, at 10:00a local Frankfurt time.
