Beginning in January 2014, Lufthansa will start retrofitting its fleet of 157 Airbus A319/A320/A321 aircraft with Vortex Generators that will reduce noise levels by approximately 2db.
The Vortex Generators will be installed underneath the wings which will cancel out certain sounds that are generated when air passes over Fuel Tank Pressure Equalization Vents. Currently, when air passes over these vents it creates an effect and sound similar to when you blow over a bottle top. The new vortex generators will create a mini-tornado effect over the vent and eliminate the sound effect.
According to Lufthansa this will reduce the exterior in-flight noise levels by up to 2db so that the aircraft will generate less noise pollution when landing and departing an airport as well as when flying overhead.

Lufthansa has officially opened another Passenger Lounge in Frankfurt. The new Business Class Lounge is located in Terminal A near gate A26. This lounge is located in the ‘Schengen’ area and is convenient for passengers who flights will be departing from from Gates A20 through 42 to Schengen destinations.
The space for this new lounge was previously occupied by a Lufthansa First Class lounge, but with the new First Class Lounge that opened earlier this year, the space became available and is being used to help meet the demand for business travelers. Additionally, some of the amenities of the First Class Lounge were left in place, including 2 private Sleep/Rest rooms and 3 Shower rooms — unusual for a typical Business Class Lounge.
By the way, just outside of the lounge there are great views of various taxiways which offer some good plane spotting potential. Just in case you are weird and into that kind of stuff! 😉
Star Alliance Gold members along with passengers traveling on a Star Alliance carrier in Business Class or higher are eligible to use Lufthansa Business Class Lounges. Keep in mind if you have Star Alliance Gold status, you can also access Lufthansa’s Senator Lounges.

Lufthansa Cargo’s 1st 777 Freighter has just been painted in Portland, Oregon and is receiving her finishing touches at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. She’s scheduled to arrive home on November 1 to join the fleet and to mark the occasion Lufthansa Cargo is running a contest that will allow 10 lucky winners to attend the ceremonies.
The contest is being held on their Facebook Page and entry requirements are fairly simply. All you have to do is submit a 1-minute video or a creative “Selfie” (Picture of yourself) showing why YOU should be one of the winners. Hopefully Miley Cyrus stays away from posting any photos here…. 😉
You need to post your photo or video on Lufthansa Cargo’s Facebook Wall or send it to them via personal message on Facebook. You have until October 23 to enter. The 10 winners as determined by LH Cargo will be invited to attend.
Please note that you must arrange your own travel to and from Frankfurt as well as accommodations while in Frankfurt. LH Cargo is only providing an invitation to the event.
Good Luck!

Lufthansa has launched a seasonal Business Class Fare Sale for travel between Germany and the USA. Fares are quite attractive and start as low as €1888 between Munich and Boston and reach as high as €2749 for flights between Munich and Los Angeles. The fare covers all of Lufthansa’s NORTH AMERICAN destinations, so Mexico City and Canadian cities are involved in the fare promotion.
What is nice about this fare sale is that it covers the main Holiday travel periods of Thanksgiving (23-30 November) , Christmas/New Year (23 December – 2 January) and even Easter for 2014 (12-27 April).
The terms are not to complicated. 28 days advance ticket purchase and a Saturday night stay is required. Tickets can be rebooked for €240 but are non-refundable.
For those of you expecting a fare sale for travel starting in the USA, I expect that one will be announced in a matter of days, if not sooner. So far Lufthansa has launched Premium Class sales from Great Britain and mainland Europe, so the USA is next in line for Holiday Travel deals.

Lufthansa is in the Oktoberfest spirit and will be bringing the celebration to passengers traveling on long haul Lufthansa flights during September and to their lounges in Munich.
The highlight of the celebration will be when special Lufthansa “Trachten” cabin crew teams dress in traditional Bavarian costumes for certain flights operating from Munich to New York, Chicago and Tokyo.
On September 18, passengers flying from Munich to New York will experience the festive look of the flight crew. Then on September 24 passengers flying from Munich to Chicago will have their chance and then on May 30 passengers traveling from Munich to Tokyo will see the flight crew dressed in their Oktoberfest best.

Welcome Aboard!
Additionally, Business Class passengers traveling on long haul flights from Munich, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt will have the opportunity to sample authentic Bavarian cuisine. During this time, Lufthansa has changed its inflight dining menu to reflect traditional fare usually experienced during Oktoberfest including landjager and radi (cold smoked sausage and radish), tafelspitz (boiled beef), trout, obazda (a spicy cheese) and knowdel with schwammerl (dumplings with mushrooms).
The lounges in Munich will also join in the celebration and will offer authentic Bavarian items during September. Senator Lounge visitors will enjoy a variety of unique Bavarian cold platters and pretzels while First Class passengers will be treated to specialities such as duck and sugared pancakes.
For those of you traveling in First Class, you will be able to collect your special edition Bavarian Duck (just make a left at the Cigar Room and go to the reception area by the Spa and ask for yours!). Male and female versions will be available:
