LUFTHANSA Pilot Union To Strike TOMORROW, September 5.

LUFTHANSA Pilot Union To Strike TOMORROW, September 5.

In news out of Germany, Lufthansa is bracing for yet another strike action by the union representing the majority of their pilots.  This one comes with only a few hours notice.

The strike will cover primarily domestic and European flights departing and arriving from Frankfurt between 5:00p and 11:00p (CEST) tomorrow, September 5.   It looks like 200 flights are at risk of being canceled.   According to LH, it looks like they will start canceling some flights with departures as early as 1:30p with a majority of flights being canceled that are scheduled for 4p or later.

If your travels involve Lufthansa within Germany or Europe tomorrow,  please contact Lufthansa or your travel agent.

You can also visit Lufthansa.com, access your reservation through ‘My Bookings’ and you’ll be presented with your options for rebooking.

Lufthansa’s ‘germanwings’ Pilots Set To Strike Tomorrow, August 29.

Lufthansa’s ‘germanwings’ Pilots Set To Strike Tomorrow, August 29.

The union representing the majority of Lufthansa’s pilots has followed up on their threat to call strikes on short notice by asking pilots for ‘germanwings’ to strike on Friday from 6:00a to noon (CEST).  This will affect upwards of 116 flights.

The strike can still be averted if a negotiation session taking place today goes well and sides can reach some agreement on the issues at hand.  The biggest sticking point creating this mess is the fact that the union wants pilots to be able to take 60% of their income if or when they retire at age 55, while Lufthansa is suggesting that pilots can fly until they are 65 and begin taking benefits at that point.

If your germanwings flights are impacted by this strike, please use this link to contact their service center so that they can reaccommodate you.

I wish I could retire at 55 and get 60% of my income at that point.   Sounds a bit too optimistic 😉 .

LUFTHANSA Pilot’s Union Insists That Strike Is Imminent

LUFTHANSA Pilot’s Union Insists That Strike Is Imminent

In the words of the immortal Yogi Berra, it’s ‘Deja Vu All Over Again’……

The union representing the majority of Lufthansa pilots has threatened the airline with what it calls an ‘imminent’ strike after breaking off talks with airline this weekend.    Though they said that they will strike at any moment, they promised to give enough notice so that passengers would not be stranded at airports.   So thoughtful.

Apparently the negotiations that have taken place over the 3-4 months after the last strike in April did not please the union so they are back at their typical antics.   During the April version of the strike, the union actually lost support of the public that they usually enjoy during their tantrums.     This will not help their public relations this time either since they are threatening to strike during the peak of the European vacation season that runs into mid-September.

If your travel over the next days and weeks involves Lufthansa-operated flights, please pay special attention to these developments as they will obviously impact your travel.   I’ll provide updates as more information becomes available.

Couple this with the beginning of an Icelandic volcano eruption that threatens air travel, and we’re staring at an unfortunate ‘1-2 combination’ that promises to make things interesting.

ITALY Travel Will Be A Mess Tomorrow: Strikes Everywhere

ITALY Travel Will Be A Mess Tomorrow: Strikes Everywhere

Apologies for not getting this out sooner as I was tied up away from a Wifi connection for most of today…

If your plans call for you to be in Italy tomorrow, be prepared for what is basically going to be a nationwide strike by anyone who works in a transportion related field.

Specific to air travel , Airport personnel at all Italian airports are expected to walk off the job beginning at midnight local time on May 30 and be on strike for 24 hours.    In addition to the airport workers being on strike, there will also be a nationwide strike that will affect all rail and bus operations throughout the country during the day as well.  On top of that, several Italian airlines have indicated that their employees will join the strike in solidarity.  Anything to miss a day at work I guess…..

If your travel plans include flying on Lufthansa  please check the status of your flight using this link.   Should your flight be cancelled, you will be able to rebook your ticket or request a refund.   You can contact Lufthansa’s Italy service center on 199 400 044 24/hrs a a day should you need further help with your travel plans.

As far as I can tell, Lufthansa has already started to cancel SOME flights scheduled for tomorrow and I expect that more cancellations will be added as the strike approaches.

LUFTHANSA and Pilots Union Agree To Continue Negotiations – Strike Threat Diminishes

In a meeting between Lufthansa and representatives of Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) held on Thursday, both sides agreed to a series of meetings to continue discussing the gamut of issues that exists between them.

Though dates have been scheduled for these sessions, I do not know what they are at this point. The good news in all of this is that both sides see enough reasons to return to the ‘table’.

Translation? For now, the threat of strikes has diminished. However if these meetings do not go well, expect the Union to announce further strikes even though they are losing support in the court of public opinion in Germany and with non-Pilot Lufthansa employees.
