On a regular basis, SWISS likes to change up its on board dining experiences so that passengers can be exposed to a variety of Swiss inspired themes. Changes to the menu tend to happen every few months and are usually reflected in premium cabins on both short and long haul flights and are done in hopes of sharing a bit of native Swiss hospitality with their passengers.
The next iteration of unique dining experiences will take place between May 7 and May 20 and will focus of the Swiss tradition of ‘Alpaufzug’. In it’s simplest terms, Alpaufzug or ‘Alpine Cattle Drive’, is a tradition that celebrates the procession of cattle and goats to higher elevations for spring and summer grazing. During the spring, numerous festivals are held throughout Switzerland celebrating this rite.

The popular Alpaufzug is even depicted on a special livery on one of SWISS’ ‘Jumbolino’ aircraft.
To bring the celebration on board, passengers traveling in short-haul Business Class within Europe will have their own ‘festival’ thanks to an Alpaufzug inspired menu.
According to SWISS, onboard catering will include options such as Mostbröckli (cured beef), Appenzell cheese-carpaccio with cabbage salad and hazelnut vinaigrette and a Landsgemeinde steak (veal) along with apple “rösti” and chard gratin. Dessert will be a “Biberfladenmousse”, a Mousse made with Gingerbread and almond paste.

Since 2009, SWISS has partnered with the Peninsula Hotel Group to offer First and Business Class passengers traveling between Zurich and Hong Kong a unique culinary experience. This joint effort will now be expanding to other Asian routes served by SWISS.
Beginning in March, First and Business class passengers traveling between Zurich and Bangkok will be able to enjoy the enhanced offering. In June, the service will extend to flights between Zurich and Shanghai, and finally, Beijing in September.
The menus are set to rotate every 3 months and will be inspired by local Swiss cuisine to give travelers either a taste of home if they are returning to Switzerland or a preview of things to come for those visiting Switzerland for the first time.

Not to be outdone by Lufthansa’s 2-day sale to Europe, SWISS has launched their own fare sale but it is only in place today, February 26. The fare sale covers travel for the month of March.
Similar to the LH offer, SWISS is offering very attractive fares from their US Gateways. Most fares range between the high $600 range (New York/Geneva) and mid-$700s for the bulk of SWISS’ European destinations. Additionally, great fares are available from Chicago – with the best one being a $574 ticket to Istanbul!
The west coast is involved as well, with most fares being in the mid to upper $800 range. This includes San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The fare sale does extend to some non-European SWISS destinations with attractive fares to Africa and the Middle East. Johannesburg has been popular with the LH Group as of late, and SWISS’ deal is only $850 from NYC to JNB.
As I mentioned, this is a ONE DAY fare sale only, and availability is somewhat limited. These fares are available for Sunday through Thursday departures and returns. You will not find these low fares for weekend travel dates.
Keep in mind that other airlines including Edelweiss, United and Lufthansa may operate some of these flights. As far as earning frequent flyer miles, what you earn will be determined by the airline that you fly. In some cases you may only earn 50% of miles travel or none at all in some cases. So please check with you FF program to see what you’ll earn before you book.
