A relatively quiet week as far as new route announcements from Star Alliance member carriers. The most updates come from THAI who updated their Winter 2013/14 timetable primarily with increases on routes flown by their SMILE subsidiary. The week saw most Star Alliance carriers report timeframes for the re-introduction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on their routes. Most carriers will begin flying the 787 in next month or so. United has already put theirs into circulation on US domestic routes on May 20.

As part of the ongoing transition that will see germanwings take over most intra-Germany and short haul european routes from Lufthansa, an update for the winter 2013-14 timetable has been published. This update lists flights that will be operated by germanwings beginning October 27, 2013:
Berlin (TXL) – Birmingham will operate 6x/week
Berlin (TXL) – Bologna will operate 6x/week
Berlin (TXL) – Bucharest will operate 3x/week (Starting Nov 13)
Berlin (TXL) – Catania will operate 2x/week (Starting Nov 5)
Berlin (TXL) – Geneva will operate 5x/week
Berlin (TXL) – Malaga will operate 1x/week

Berlin (TXL) – Nuremberg will operate11/x week
Berlin (TXL) – Rome will operate 4x/week (Starting Nov 13)
Berlin (TXL) – Vienna will operate 6x/week
Hamburg – Moscow(VKO) will operate 4x/week
More updates are certain to occur and I’ll bring them to your attention as they happen. Keep in mind that these flights will not count as Star Alliance member operated flights and therefore do not have Star Alliance benefits associated with them (Miles accrual, priority boarding, etc).
For those of you not familiar with what has been happening, Lufthansa in 2012 made a decision to create a stand-alone Low Cost Carrier within the Lufthansa Group. LH decided to use it’s germanwings subsidiary to become the sole low cost carrier for the group and it will serve the routes that Lufthansa used to fly in the past. These routes primarily comprise intra-German and European short haul routes. Any flights into and out of Munich and Frankfurt however will still be flown by Lufthansa.

Lufthansa Cargo has launched a GREAT contest to kick off a strategy that will see all of their aircraft “carry” their own name. Much like Lufthansa passenger, Cargo will over time christen each aircraft with her own identity. To begin the process, Cargo’s new contest is open to everyone to submit their absolute best ideas for a name for one of their MD-11 as well as for the 5 Boeing 777’s that will begin to join the fleet in October (5 will ultimately enter service).
Lufthansa Cargo has set up a dedicated page on their website that allows you to register and list your entries for each of the aircraft currently in service. You are also asked for some detail behind the motivation for the names that you have recommended. You need to provide names for at least 10 aircraft in order for your entry to be eligible.
With that said, the prize for this contest is fantastic!
The Winner, who will be selected by a Lufthansa Cargo panel, will be flown to Frankfurt and be a VIP guest of Cargo for the welcome ceremony for the first Boeing 777 Freighter. You’ll also be among the very first to sit “behind the yoke” during your private tour of the cockpit. It is at this time that the new 777F will be christened with her new name.
To enter the contest, please visit Lufthansa Cargo’s contest webpage. You’ll need to register. Once registered, you will be able to access the contest and you’ll see a listing of all of Cargo’s aircraft, and a space next to each tail number where you enter your best idea. Remember, you need to provide at least 10 names in order to be eligible.
Think outside the box for this, think about fantastic travel destinations, mythology, legends, etc.
There is no right or wrong answer here, just one that will earn you a trip to Frankfurt and see your creation painted on the side of a brand new aircraft!
The contest ends on July 15.
