This morning, Lufthansa loaded discounted First Class fares into their reservation system that reflects a 40-50% discount off of typical First Class fares. The best deal looks to be between Houston and Stockholm for only $5600. Otherwise, most departures from the East Coast range from the high $5000 to mid $6000 range while departures from the Midwest and West Coast range between the mid $6000 and mid $7000 range.
These fares are valid for departures between June 27 and August 30, 2014 with return flights needing to take place between June 29 and November 30, 2014. This is fantastic window since it covers the high peak summer travel season to Europe. Tickets must be purchased by July 2, 2014 and 60 days prior to departure.
🙂 Included at no additional cost 🙂 is access to the fantastic First Class Terminal if you connect through Frankfurt where you can enjoy private car transfers to your connecting flights and even grab your very own First Class Duck souvenir! 🙂 Of course you will also have access to the First Class Lounges inside the airport in Frankfurt or in Munich. If you depart from NYC, you’ll have a First Class Lounge experience waiting for you there as well.
Normally, First Class tickets will typically range from $9000 to $12000 or more, so when they are discounted like this, it offers a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of one of the finest First Class experiences that you can have with any airline.

The union representing the majority of Lufthansa’s Pilots has announced that it plans to have pilots, and the rest of the country it appears, strike from April 2 at midnight to April 4, midnight (Wednesday through Friday) thus creating the potential for a 3-day industrial action.
In the press release from the union, they called for a nationwide strike so it will be more than just pilots who would walk off the job. For example this week’s strike at Germany airports were in sympathy to child care workers who wanted more money and better benefits.
Before anyone starts panicking, please bear in mind that there are a few days left to allow for negotiations to work. But please be prepared for the worst as a 3 day strike can have a crippling effect. With the strike being a ‘nationwide industrial action’ it has the potential to affect rail and bus travel as well.
If you are traveling on Lufthansa during this time frame, you will be able to modify your booking by visiting the the “My Booking” Area of Lufthansa.com
Also, you can Use this link to determine the best phone number to contact based on your location if you can not access your reservation online to make necessary changes. Just be prepared and patient for potentially long hold times.
As another resource, Lufthansa does have a webpage that you can look to which provides updates on possible flight disruptions.
We’ve also set up a dedicated WIKI thread on FlyerTalk that will try to gather the latest information as it becomes available.
According to Lufthansa, they have already submitted a counter proposal to the union that has not yet been replied to, offering a temporary solution while both sides work out a longer term deal. Should the temporary plan be agreed to, the strike would be called off. The next few days will be fluid to say the least!
If you have any questions or need help, please let me know.

Earlier this week, the FAA sent out a directive to operators of the Boeing 747-8i warning of a software fault that would create a dangerous condition at landing. In the directive the FAA suggested that should a 747-8i need to abort a landing or go back into ‘Air Mode’ near or right after landing, the software would not allow a change in hydraulic pressure needed to reset the engine thrust reversers. This would leave an aircraft at risk of not having enough speed to go back into ‘Air Mode’.
Lufthansa has announced that NONE of the 11 747-8i in the fleet are subject to this directive as they have already had the software upgrade applied well in the past. This will also apply to D-ABYN which will be the 12th 747-8i to join the fleet sometime in the next week or 2.
Other 747-8i operators are required to make sure this software update is executed by April 9.
