Lufthansa has just announced that it will take one of their A321 aircraft in the new livery and fly it as part of its regular day on February 8. Stops will include Milan, Paris, Frankfurt, and Munich. The chart below shows exactly what time the flights will take place and their corresponding flight numbers.

In addition to the A321, Lufthansa will also send their flagship 747-8i (D-ABYA) around Germany to show off the new look. Her stops will include Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bremen, Hamburg, Dresden, Hannover, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart and back to Frankfurt. The Bremen, Hannover, Cologne, Stuttgart, Dresden appearances will be fly-bys or quick touch and goes while the other airports will see her rest for 30 to 60 minutes at each stop.
Here is the chart showing how D-ABYA will spend her day on February 8:

Look for more info and a lot more coverage from me as we get closer to the formal unveil….

LUFTHANSA has unveiled the update to their livery to mark ‘100 years of the Crane’ and quite honestly I must say that I like it!
Certain elements have been removed, but replaced with new and updated features that will really help the LH fleet stand out.
What’s changed:
- Lufthansa has decided to forego the yellow and blue logo that adorns the tail and replaced it with a white logo surrounded by a new, darker and more rich blue that will extend from the tail and follows the tail’s line onto the fuselage.
- The grey belly is also a thing of the past. The planes will now be fully white, except for the blue found in the tail section.
- A minor update to the font as well, but not so much that it looks radically different.
To see how it all comes together, here are a couple of pages from Lufthansa’s inflight magazine that highlight the changes and discusses them in a bit more detail. The only thing I wish that would have been considered was to bring the new blue color onto the engine nacelles to really ‘pop’ the middle of the aircraft.
As you can see below the front of the plan looks fairly identical to the current look except for what LH refers to as a ‘simplified, timeless new typeface’…..which still looks very much as the current version.

The rear of the aircraft is where we really see the impact of the new look. Lufthansa has gone with a darker blue for the tail, and as I mentioned earlier, the yellow circle and blue crane have been replaced with a sleeker version of the 100-year old logo. Additionally, the blue now flows onto the fuselage to accentuate the lines of the tail. You’ll also notice that they paint the leading edge of the tail white to further help show off the plane’s geometry. Though by keeping it white, it also prevents paint chips from being too obvious. Take a look at an older Singapore A380’s tail and you’ll see what I mean, the leading edge of the tail takes a lot of abuse!

These changes will not be limited to only the aircraft. LH over the coming months will refresh everything to reflect the new look, including stationery, airport signage, media graphics, all the way down to the hangars that are found aboard their aircraft. In fact it will take a few years to get hundreds of aircraft to sport the new look. Each aircraft will be repainted as it goes in for normal ‘heavy’ maintenance.
I think Lufthansa has knocked it out of the ballpark with this new look. Fortunately, they decided to honor the Crane and her 100 years of flying with Lufthansa but they brought her into the 21st century in a beautiful and modern way.
I very much look forward to seeing it in person.

Lufthansa has announced that it will unveil an updated livery sometime during the second week of February. But before you get too excited or worried about what the new look might be, it will not be a radical departure from what is already in place. They key word is enhancement, not reinvention.
Some blogs and websites were panic-stricken at the thought of the new look, with some sites going as far as importing color schemes and drawings straight from fantasy land. I’m here to dispel that notion and the fake news and help bring some clarity to what will most likely be the final product.
Prevailing information suggests that ‘yellow’ will no longer have a major place in the Lufthansa color palette. Expect the new colors to be focused on the existing Blue, White, and add some Silver. For the cabin color schemes, expect much of the same, including the blues and browns (Business and Prem Eco cabin accents) currently found on most aircraft. What will be a new change will be the addition of lighter blues into the color mix. You can see now with their new A350s that light and medium blues are the primary colors throughout the Economy cabin.
As far as the exterior goes, I suspect that the yellow will be gone from the tail logo, and I fully expect it to be replaced with a white Crane inside the familiar circle. Expect the tail of the aircraft to remain blue, and the fuselage to stay white, though we might see the belly lose its grey color. It wouldn’t surprise me if the engine nacelles didn’t get dipped in blue paint to give the center of the aircraft a bit of contrast.
The font is also not expected to be changed dramatically if at all.
Remember, we are dealing with one of commercial aviation’s richest histories as well as logos and designs that have transcended nearly 100 years. Lufthansa is not about to throw it all out the door and come out with some new radical monstrosity of a look.
This might very well be the new color scheme that graces the vertical stabilizer on LH aircraft in the future (see, it’s not some radical reinvention):

In fact, visit this Lufthansa webpage, and click on the video which is full of hints as to what the new look will be. Though I can’t guarantee it, I think what I’ve mentioned in this post is a safer bet at this point than your Bitcoin account.
As it stands today, Lufthansa’s first 747-8i (D-ABYA) is parked in a hangar in Rome going through her facelift to reflect the change and will be the aircraft that debuts the new look. If things go to plan, we’ll see the new look during the week of February 12. Keep in mind with such things that changes in the timeline are highly possible.

BRUSSELS AIRLINES has announced a contest seeking someone to create a 5th tribute livery to compliment the other 4 in the fleet.
The contest revolves around Belgium’s identity and ‘Belgitude’ and is looking for someone to design a livery that captures the heart and spirit of Belgium and her people and translate it onto the side of an aircraft.
The contest is straight forward. You’ll need to download their blank aircraft template, design your livery, and upload it for consideration. A panel of 10 judges will review all entries and select 2 finalists.
The submissions of the 2 finalists will be posted on Brussels’ Facebook page and the submission with the most votes from the FB community will have their design applied to an aircraft.
The deadline to enter this contest is Midnight on August 31. Winners will be selected in September.
The Grand Prize winner will have the opportunity to witness their design being applied to the aircraft, as well as being present at the unveiling of the aircraft to the public.

Lufthansa has unveiled a new livery that will dress up one of their A340 aircraft as it brings Bayern Munich to the USA for the Audi Summer Tour. The tour brings some of Europe’s top Football teams to the USA for a series of exhibition matches in Chicago, Charlotte, and New York. In addition to Bayern, fans will be able to enjoy watching Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and AC Milan take to the pitch.
The first match for Bayern will be in Chicago on July 27 against AC Milan. From there they’ll travel to Charlotte for a match against Inter Milan on July 3 before wrapping up the tour in New York on August 3 against Real Madrid.
To make sure that fans (and airport visitors) know that Bayern is in town, they’ll show up in an A340-600 (D-AIHK) in each city that they are scheduled to play in. After this exhibition, the A340 will continue to carry the livery for the next year.

D-AIHK shown prior to departing to the USA with FC Bayern aboard on July 25.
