In case you missed this week’s announcement, Lufthansa will begin service between Munich and Miami starting on December 2, 2014. Based on the current timetable, plans call for 5 day a week service (except Monday and Friday). What’s even better is that this will be flown by a 3-class Airbus A330 so you’ll get you experience the new First Class cabin as well as the new Business Class cabin. This route is expected to last until the Winter Timetable closes on April 30, 2015.
The details of the flights are as follows (all times local):
LH460 will depart Munich at 11:45a and arrive in Miami at 5:15p (Scheduled for 11 hrs. 30 min).
LH461 will depart Miami at 6:55p and arrive the following morning in Munich at 10:25a (Scheduled for 9 hrs. 30 min).
Booking for this new flight is available now.

Over the last 3 weeks I flew to and through Frankfurt twice which created quite an opportunity to add to my Lufthansa plane spotting gallery. At some point in the near future I’ll need to sit down and truly categorize all the LH aircraft that I’ve caught on film over the last 3 years and see who is missing. I know that I’ve ‘spotted’ each active 747-400 and 747-8i. I have most of the A380 and A340/A330 fleet as well. The challenge will be to track down all the narrow-body birds. There may be too many A319/20/21s and regional jets for me to catch up with unless they start flying in and out of GRR, but its the challenge and chase that keeps me buying more film.
This grouping was taken from the Terminal 2 Observation Deck on a day where rain and sun took turns as far as the weather was concerned. Unfortunately this created a bit of a heat haze issue since every shower was followed by bright sunlight which created a bit of vapor in the air. Not bad as LAX in the summer, but not great either as you’ll see in some of the shots.
In case you missed it a few days ago, I posted a series of photos of non-Lufthansa aircraft taken on the same day. You can find those images by clicking here.

This ‘JetFriends’ A319 was a victim of some heat haze. D-AILU was delivered to Lufthansa in November 1997.

D-AIZT, an A320 featuring ‘Sharklets’, joined the fleet in May 2013.

D-AIGS, an Airbus A340-300, joined the fleet in October 1999.

D-AIHB, aka ‘Bremerhaven’ joined the fleet in November 2003.

A340-600 D-AIHK or ‘Mainz’ joined the fleet in May 2004.

D-ABEK, a Boeing 737, joined the fleet in November 1991.

D-ABVZ joined the fleet in February 2001 and is the 3rd youngest 747-400 in fleet.

D-ABYD was the 3rd 747-8i to join the fleet when she arrived in Frankfurt on August 25, 2012.

D-ABYI, one of Lufthansa’s newer 47-8i, sports a World Cup ‘Fanhansa’ livery. She was delivered to Lufthansa on May 29, 2013.

D-ABYA, Lufthansa’s First 747-8i prepares to take off as 747-400 D-ABVM is set to follow.

Lufthansa Cargo’s MD-11 D-ALCK joined the fleet in May 2000.

TripAdvisor recently conducted its Traveler’s Choice Award voting for 2014 and as a result Lufthansa has earned the honor of ‘Best Airline’ in Germany.
Over 95,000 people participated in the survey which allowed voters to pick their favorites from a myriad of travel related categories for 12 countries. Among the many categories open for voting, they included Hotels, Travel Gear, Airlines, Fast Food, etc. etc. all the way down to favorite deodorant.
Lufthansa’s Chief of Sales & Marketing, Jens Bischof went on to add that “It is a special honor for us, when thousands of travelers in the TripAdvisor community vote Lufthansa into the top spot as the best German airline. It makes us particularly happy that high quality and innovative travel options have a particularly significant value in the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards”.
Nice to see that in spite of all the challenges that LH has faced over the last few weeks and months such as airport and crew strikes, passengers still recognize a great airline when they see one!

Lufthansa has announced that it will continue to serve the Charlotte market with daily service to Munich. It will continue to provide a 3-class A340-600 on the route. This was widely expected and comes on the heels of US Airways moving to OneWorld as a result of its merger with American.
Additionally, LH passengers will be able continue to fly on US Airways on the same itinerary as their LH flights so no additionally reservations will need to be made for passengers connecting in CLT for onward travel on US. This will continue for the rest of 2014.
As part of this relationship extension Lufthansa Passengers will also be able to access the US Airways lounge in Charlotte as well.
I suspect that this relationship will end at the end of the year but service between MUC and CLT should continue beyond 2014.

To celebrate the Hamburg Port Festival this May, a group of ‘travel enthusiasts’ will gather from around the world for 2 days to take part in the 825th edition of the Festival. For those of you unfamiliar with the festival, it is during the weekend of May 9-11 and is full of events around the city including the opening and closing fleet parades that take place on the river, firework shows, concerts, etc.
To get things started, the Parade of Ships will open the Festival at 4p on Friday at 4:00p where visitors can take in a wide variety of ships, from ancient tall ships to modern day cruise liners. During this opening parade, Lufthansa’s Junkers Ju52 will do a flyer-over of the procession as the event gets underway. I’ll be on that flight along with the winner of the Jason Dahl Scholarship fundraiser that was held earlier this year.

The ‘DO’ will have a decidedly aviation-based theme (would you expect anything different?) and includes private tours of Airbus’ facility in Finkenwerder, an evening dinner cruise on the River Elbe complete with Fireworks Show and an exclusive tour of Lufthansa Technik.
Here is the itinerary for the weekend……
Saturday, May 10:
11:00a – 1:00p: Airbus Tour in Finkenwerder where we will see the A320 assembly line as well as the A380 finish line.
The afternoon is open for you to explore Hamburg and take in the Festival. However, several of us are planning on going to Miniatur Wunderland to see the world’s biggest smallest airport.
7:00p – 11:30p: Enjoy dinner aboard a sailing yacht as we make our way down the River Elbe and take in the fireworks show during the evening.
Sunday, May 11:
10:00a – 1:00p: We will be given an exclusive ‘off the menu’ tour of Lufthansa’s Technik Facility. This is Lufthansa’s largest maintenance hub and we’ll have access to the VIP Hangar, overhaul shops and main hangar.

The ‘DO’ is built on an a-la-carte basis, attendees can choose and pay for which events they wish to attend. As of now there are still a few openings left for each of the events but I expect that we’ll reach full capacity in the next week or so.
To learn more about the events including pricing and sign up information, please visit the dedicated thread on FlyerTalk. You can also email me or leave a comment if you have any questions or need more info.
A big H/T to FlyerTalk’s Oliver2002 for putting together this event!
