MUNICH Clears Major Hurdle Towards 3rd Runway

MUNICH Clears Major Hurdle Towards 3rd Runway

Earlier today the German Federal Administrative Court gave its blessing toward the building of a much needed and much debated 3rd runway at Munich Airport.

The court ruled in favor of the airport after hearing arguments from Bundes Naturschutz, a nature conservancy group in Bavaria.   The court also dismissed other private complaints filed against the building of the new runway.     From what I gather, this was the last major legal hurdle that needed to be cleared ahead of planning the construction.

The runway, which would be built on the north side of the field will run parallel to MUCs other 2 runways and will be a major compliment to the new terminal that is set to open next year.

Munich Plane Spotting June 2015: Part I

Munich Plane Spotting June 2015: Part I

Last week I spent several days in Europe to attend the Austrian Grand Prix as well as to make stops in Munich and Frankfurt for a bit of plane spotting and LH Business.

Frankfurt was a disappointment due primarily to the lack of progress on their Observation Deck renovation.  I only had a few hours free in FRA so I couldn’t go to my favorite spotting site along the North-South runway.

Munich however was fantastic.  Weather cooperated nicely and with large white and grey clouds to act as a backdrop, it provided for a solid spotting session.    And thanks to Munich, I was able to capture about 26 LH aircraft that were missing from my ‘spotted list’.  I am now only 6 LH aircraft away from personally spotting the entire mainline fleet.    I suspect the missing 6 will require a bit of stalking and hunting on my part later this year when I return.

Munich’s Besucherpark offers a great view of their runways, and with winds out of the west, creates the opportunity to catch departing flights as they take off.   The large viewing hill (more like a pyramid) puts you above the airport and gives a great prespective.    Admission is only €1 and is open 24 hours…..a pretty good value!

So for part 1, here are 12 images that I though turned out rather well and include a diverse range of liveries.     Part II will focus a bit more on the LH fleet.

Enjoy!

Always an interesting scene when an El Al aircraft departs Germany. The armored police escort is provided at both MUC and FRA.

LUFTHANSA: All Munich Based 3-class Long-Haulers Now Have NEW First Class Cabin

LUFTHANSA: All Munich Based 3-class Long-Haulers Now Have NEW First Class Cabin

Lufthansa provided an update on Friday indicating that all of their long haul aircraft based in Munich (Airbus A330 & A340) now feature the new First Class cabin.

In all, 24 MUC-based aircraft now have the new cabin.   Next up for the fleet will be the completion of the Premium Economy cabin install, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

I expect LH to release their monthly fleet retrofit report in the next few days which will provide additional detail on their progress.

Lufthansa Celebrates Oktoberfest With Special ‘Trachten Team’ Flights

Continuing its tradition of celebrating Oktoberfest each year, Lufthansa has announced plans to bring this great festival aboard several flights over the coming days and weeks.

Beginning today, September 15,  Lufthansa will have certain flights operating from Munich ‘outfitted’ with special crews.  These crews, known as ‘Trachten Teams’ will be dressed in traditional Bavarian attire and will bring a bit of Oktoberfest to each of these special flights.  Something new for this year, passengers filing within Europe will also have an opportunity to experience LH’s Oktoberfest hospitality.

The following photo shows the variety of attire that you’ll find in Munich and on the special Tracthen flights.    From left to right:  Munich Customer Service Staff,  Long Haul Flight Attendants (center 2), Lufthansa CityLine Flight attendants.

LUFTHANSA Strike Update For Tomorrow: 747 To Fly Between Frankfurt and Munich!

LUFTHANSA Strike Update For Tomorrow: 747 To Fly Between Frankfurt and Munich!

In response to the pilot’s strike called for tomorrow in Munich, Lufthansa will operate AT LEAST 1 Round Trip between Frankfurt and Munich with a 747-400.  It’s too bad that such a rare event has to take place under this kind of circumstance, but if you are in Munich tomorrow between 10:00 and 11:00a, be on the look out for tail #D-ABVY.

D-ABVY will make a cameo appearance in Munich on Wednesday.

There may be another 747 service between FRA and MUC but nothing official has been published by Lufthansa as of yet.  This is a saavy way that LH can bypass some of the flights affecting passengers in Munich by rerouting their travel through Frankfurt, thus minimizing inconveniences.

Additionally, it looks like long haul flights are safe for tomorrow since pilots have volunteered to keep the long haul routes going, but there may be some delays to them as far as the afternoon departures are concerned. Lufthansa has also published a list of flights that are cancelled for tomorrow.   You can find that info here.
