The Star Alliance has launched a contest celebrating their 20th anniversary and 21 lucky winners will win 1,000,000 miles for their Frequent Flyer Program (or other prizes as determined by the airline’s frequent flyer program).
To enter, there are a few hoops that they will make you jump through including submitting a ‘selfie’, uploading a photo that you took depicting a cultural experience, and a short message discussing your cultural epiphany.
To be eligible for an entry you must be a current member of a Star Alliance frequent flyer program (status level doesn’t matter). You must also be a member in the same plan at the time the winner is announced. When completing your entry you’ll be asked to provide your Frequent Flyer number for your program and that is the account that will receive the miles. There will be one winner for each of the 21 frequent flyer programs in Star Alliance. Please be aware you can only enter once. If you are a member of multiple plans, you’ll have to pick one. Once you enter, you can not change or update your entry.
Though most of the programs will award their respective winner the 1,000,000 miles, a few of the plans have alternate prizes. SAS will award 4 ‘Round The World’ Business Class Tickets, Air China will give you 1,000,000 kilometers, Air India will give you 1,000,000 FR Points, and Air New Zealand will give you 20,000 Airpoints Dollars.
The winner will be able to use the miles as they normally would within their plan however the miles are award miles only and do not count towards status levels.
The contest runs until July 31 and the winner will be picked by a panel of judges for each frequent flyer program. The winner will be announced on September 28, 2017.

United is at it again with another edition of their MileagePlus Miles Sale.
This time, you can earn up to 50% more miles when you buy miles for your account. The bonus is incremental based on the amount of miles you purchase.
If you buy between 5,000 and 35,000 miles you’ll earn a 25% bonus.
If you buy over 35,000 miles you’ll earn a 50% bonus.
At maximum bonus levels, you’ll be buying miles for 2.3 cents per mile (including the bonus miles). Not a bad deal if you need to top off your account or are missing a few miles that are keeping you from that enjoyable Lufthansa First Class seat!
The promo started yesterday and continues through May 22. You can buy up to 150,000 miles for your account each year (including bonus miles credit).
Today marks the 18th year of my marital bliss and like any decent fellow I thought to surprise my wife at work with flowers to acknowledge her sacrifice. I figure it would be a nice change of pace for her day in between operating rooms and surgeries that typically take up her time.
So with flowers ordered a few days in advance, the surprise was set and I spent this morning waiting for her to let me know that the bouquet had arrived. So at about midday, they finally show up and we exchange a few messages (Me in the blue):
Typically when an occasion requires flowers I always suggest we do it through United Mileage Plus because of the huge multipliers you get for ordering flowers using FTD, etc. through the MileagePlus shopping portal. But in this case I ordered them from a local florist who I know and trust not to screw up something like flowers for an anniversary. So sadly no 20x miles from United for a way overpriced handful of flowers from an FTD dealer.
However, it does put a smile on my face that my wonderful wife, in midst of talking about our anniversary, is concerned about how many miles I’ll earn for celebrating it. I’m pretty lucky! 🙂
United has made their first ‘Mileage Sale’ a decent one for 2017. Mileage Plus members can earn between 25% and 75% in bonus miles with their purchase, depending on the amount of miles purchased. The sale runs through January 23.
Here is the breakdown:
If you buy between 10,000 and 14,000 miles you’ll earn a 25% bonus of additional miles (equating about 2.8 cents per mile).
If you buy between 15,000 and 29,000 miles you’ll earn a 50% bonus of additional miles (equating about 2.3 cents per mile).
If you buy between 30,000 and 85,000 miles you’ll earn a 75% bonus of additional miles (equating about 2 cents per mile).
Remember that you can buy 150,000 miles a year (including the free bonus amount), and that ‘clock’ has reset to zero for everyone so you can back the truck up and load up 150k miles once again this year.
And of course you know that the best place to use these miles is for those First and Business Class Seats on Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and Austrian!
When you first bring up the Mileage Plus purchase screen, you’ll see an offer for only 50%, but when you log in you should see the 75% offer available.
UPDATE: Some of you have shared that you are being limited only to 50% bonus for purchases. This may be as a result of United targeting certain members for a 50% or 75% bonus. Here is an image from my own transaction, showing that I would receive a 75% bonus:
Need those extra few miles for a Lufthansa First Class Ticket?
Until May 27, United’s Mileage Plus is offering a bonus of up to 100% of award miles purchased for your account. The sale is tiered whereby you will get a 25% bonus for buying between 5000 and 19000 miles, a 50% bonus for buying between 20,000 and 39,000 miles and a fantastic 100% bonus for buying 40,000 or more miles. Keep in mind you can buy up to 150,000 miles per year per account.
At the most lucrative level, the 100% bonus tier, you’ll wind up only paying 1.88 cents per mile (including taxes). Well below the threshold for what is considered a good deal.
