Frankfurt Spotting March 2015: Non-Lufthansa Liveries Part I

Frankfurt Spotting March 2015: Non-Lufthansa Liveries Part I

After spending some time in FRA last week, which of course created ample opportunity to spend time taking a few photos, I finally have had a chance to begin sorting through my memory cards.

For the first installment, I’ll focus on non-Lufthansa liveries.   Frankfurt’s position as a truly global airport provides spotters the opportunity to see aircraft that they may not normally see otherwise.  In my case, I have no chance to see an Iran Air or an Air Europa aircraft in the US which makes spotting in FRA so enjoyable.

Here are a few shots that I thought provide a unique look at liveries that most people would never see unless they are able to be at a place like FRA on a regular basis.    The next installment will of course focus on some of my favorite LH shots, of which there are hundreds.

Germanwings Flight 9525 Update 9: Flight Data Recorder Recovered & Co-Pilot’s Tablet Investigated

Germanwings Flight 9525 Update 9: Flight Data Recorder Recovered & Co-Pilot’s Tablet Investigated

Prosecutors in France have acknowledged that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) from Germanwings 9525 has been recovered at the crash scene.  No further information is yet available, however French authorities will hold  press conference tonight (Local time) to discuss the discovery.   The contents of the FDR have not yet been extracted or reviewed at this point.    The FDR contains all of the telemetry of the aircraft including all data on gages and aircraft flight settings and will provide critical data about the state of the aircraft leading up to the crash.

In other news regarding 4U 9525, Dusseldorf’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has released the findings of a search of the Co-Pilot’s Tablet PC.   In their findings, the prosecutors office is stating that the Co-Pilot had in the days preceding the crash searched the internet for topics related to suicide and security of cockpit doors.   The search for these topics took place between March 16 and March 23, 2015.

Enter To Win A Lufthansa 747-8i D-ABYT ‘Retro’ Calendar

Back in February of this year, I had the opportunity to be at Paine Field in Washington to witness the first flight of Lufthansa’s D-ABYT (click here for gallery).   This 747-8i is particularly special because it sports a ‘Retro’ livery similar to the livery that Lufthansa’s 747s carried in the 70s and 80s.

D-ABYT is the penultimate 747 that will join the Lufthansa fleet and for Airliner Enthusiasts its marks the beginning of the end of the 747 at large.   Orders and deliveries are winding down as carriers prepare for Boeing 777x in the coming years.

To mark this special moment in Lufthansa’s fleet history, I decided to take my best photos of ‘YT’, who will be nicknamed ‘Cologne’, and put together a calendar highlighting her first flight.   A big thanks goes to KKFlyer who took care of the layout and publishing of the calendar.

We ran a small batch of these calendars that will share with some of my friends within Lufthansa but I did pull one aside to give away.

So, if you would like a chance to win this calendar, simply leave a comment to this post which will act as your entry (only one entry per person please).    I’ll keep the entry period open until midnight (EDT) on Sunday, April 3.  Open to anyone, anywhere!

My next project will be a calendar dedicated to the entire Lufthansa 747-8i fleet, so look for that one in the coming weeks.    If interest is strong, we may order enough so that we can sell a few as well.

Here is a peek at the calendar.   We set it up so it starts with April 2015 and goes through March 2016.

The photos below do not do it justice since it was they were taken with a smart phone!
