Should your calendar allow you to be in Frankfurt at the end of November, please join us for the annual ‘Advent-DO’!
The event, organized by Ralf Schumann of VielFliegerTreff.com & SkyTravelAgent.de (Mileage Run Specialist!) , welcomes anyone with an interest to spend time with other Frequent Travelers and enjoy a few days in Frankfurt.
This year’s tentative itinerary is excellent and promises to deliver a great time. Among the events we expect to take place:
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28:
A round-table discussion with members of Lufthansa’s management team.
Cargo Tour – I am currently working to confirm the details with Cargo for a rare behind the scenes tour of Cargo, including access to the apron for an up close look at MD11 and 777 Freighters.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29:
LUFTHANSA Technik: A great behind the scenes tour of Lufthansa’s aircraft engineering & maintenance division. Visits to a variety of hangars will provide up close access to a variety of different LH aircraft. The tours will be given in German & English.
Premium Economy Preview: We hope to have an opportunity to board a 747-8i to experience Lufthansa’s newest cabin product first hand!
After the tours, we’ll gather for cocktails and dinner and take in the open of the Advent / Christmas Markets in Frankfurt.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30:
Brunch (Location to be determined).
Please keep in mind that this itinerary is still tentative while we wait for Lufthansa to confirm the details. I suspect that this event should have its agenda finalized in the next couple of weeks. Additionally, some of the tour components of the event may have limits as to how many people can participate due to logistics, security, etc. So it’s important to sign up early once ‘registration’ opens.
I’ll provide an update letting you know when ‘Sign Up’ officially opens. You can also keep tabs on the event by visiting the VielFliegerTreff thread for this event. At some point there will also be a thread started in FlyerTalk’s Community Buzz Forum.
If you have any questions regarding the event, please let me know by leaving a comment.

Normally, we’re accustomed to Severe Thunderstorm or Blizzard Warnings, etc. when it comes to weather forecasts and the potential impact on travel. Now, there seems to be another type of warning that we’ll have to deal with: A Geomagnetic Storm Watch.
NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has issued just such a watch for this weekend after observing two large solar flares emit from the Sun that were pointed directly at the 3rd rock from the Sun (that being Earth). Specifically, a G2 Geomagentic Storm Watch is in effect for Friday, while a G3 watch is in place for Saturday. The G3 is the more severe of the 2 types.
Based on what I read today, these types of strong solar flares are not rare, but the problem is that this specific solar flare is aimed directly at the earth which apparently is a fairly uncommon occurrence at these strengths.
According to the experts, there is widespread potential (albeit it low) for power outages as well as interference with satellite communications around the world. This would include navigation aids such as GPS and other communication links that airliners rely on when in flight. Apparently, high frequency radio transmissions to and from aircraft can be seriously impacted as soon as tonight.
These same experts also suggest that there shouldn’t be major impact from these flares, but they hedged themselves by saying that since they know so little about them, it’s hard to predict just how much their impact would be.
So, should you be sitting in a terminal this weekend wondering why your flight is delayed, or why the gate agent is saying there is a weather delay even though skies are clear and blue, you may very well be delayed thanks to something that happened on the Sun yesterday!

For those of you who did not have an opportunity to transit Munich during August, you missed Lufthansa’s special Exhibit that took passengers and visitors on a walk down memory lane.
The Exhibit, “Service Is Our Tradition”, explored nearly 60 years of Lufthansa’s commitment to its passengers. The exhibit comprised of 60 photos from Lufthansa’s archives that compared past and present scenes including moments captured in passenger cabins, airport operations and aircraft cockpits.
As you scroll through the photos you’ll notice that the Lufthansa took the archive photos and re-posed the same scene with current day surroundings for a side by side comparison.
The ‘Then & Now’ perspective goes a long way to show how LH has evolved over the last 60 years as far as equipment, technology and uniforms are concerned but also suggests the airline’s consistency over the years.
